What are the jobs like right now with the bad economy? I have a few friends around hilo and probably have a plcae to stay for a month or two then I will be needing to get my own place.

And get a round trip ticket with a delayed return so if you have to, you can get back to the mainland. Visit with your friends for a month or two, look around and see if there are any jobs available and if nothing pans out, then you've got the return ticket handy. I don't think round trips are that much more expensive than one ways. If you need to use it, it will be there, if you don't need to use it, then it was cheap insurance.

Thanks for the insights. We are visiting Hawaii for the first time. Poipu, Kauai. Spending a week. We live in central Illinois corn country. Cheap housing and other costs, beautiful neighborhoods, hot summers, lots of lakes, rain, long, but not severe, winters. We can drive to Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, D.C. , Florida, Maine, Canada etc. We can also fly to the Carribbean, or Mexico. We have a lot of advantages, maybe we should just scrimp, and save for our occasional visit to Hawaii. We have family in Cali, so can visit friends and family there on the same trip.
