Thanks, it's just as I thought about the traffic going toward Honolulu. We don't want to fight traffic every morning. Does anyone know anything about Aiea and Pearl City, they are a bit closer to Fort Shafter than Mililani. Are they family oriented towns? I may have to wait my turn and get on-post housing.

I have a 7 and an 11 year old (grade 2 and 6). I heard that Kailua and neighbor Kaneo'he have good schools. We would like to try public schools first before checking out private schools. Any comment or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The locals call Mililani "Perfect Town" - it really is nice there! One of my favorite places here on O'ahu.

+1 Agree!
I would pick living in Mililani for the better schools / community and suck it up on dealing with the traffic. IMO - worth the trade off.

Finding rentals that allow dogs is going to be your biggest challenge. Are your dogs indoor or outdoor pets?

Do you want a condo or house?

Good areas near Ala Moana:
Makiki
Manoa
Punahou
Punchbowl
Salt Lake (kind of boardline, plus further out)

Nice areas, little furthur out, but not a bad drive:
Aina Haina
Diamond Head
Kahala
Kuliouou
St. Louis Hts
Wilhelmina
Hawaii Kai (this area the most expensive, also the nicest and the furtherest out all places above).

The commute from Mililani to Ft. Shafter may be more than you want to endure. That includes one of the most crowded freeways on Oahu during Rush Hour. You may want to consider a place to live that is closer to Shafter, or has a less clogged path during rush hour (Foster Village? Kaneohe? Kailua? Downtown Honolulu -reverse commute?) ..........................
