Hi All,

Thank you in advance for any information.

I just enrolled in an individual policy with BCBS (cheaper than COBRA) that goes into effect 1/1/15.

I paid the first month's premium using my credit card.

What happens in the event that I don't actually need the coverage for 1/1?

Can I cancel the policy prior to 1/1, and receive a refund?

THANKS!!

Did you enroll through Healthcare.gov? I was considering putting one of my sons on in January, because the way the calendar looks, he won't get coverage from his job until 1/5. I asked, and was told that getting any premium money refunded was up to the individual insurance company.

In other words, you need to call BCBS and ask them.

Hi Mattie - I actually enrolled right on the BCBS website, and found a pretty cheap policy.

I will call BCBS directly.

It's your call, but personally, I would not enroll in a plan just to receive 5 days of coverage, unless you really think your son will need it.

He may end up paying for the entire month just for those 5 days, but every situation is different.

Yes, you can call the membership department and get it cancelled with a refund. Happens all the time with the new Obamacare retail policies. People change their minds all the time.
