So hope u don't get sick with something that is not covered by your insurance and you will have to sell your home and live on the streets with your family. Because your county will not care about you. So good luck with that. Call if you need something, we give a lot to charity too.

Actually that is what my friends in Canada tell me. Had one that had to wait 3 months to see a heart specialist. By the time he got in he found out that it was to late for him to be treated and he had 2 months to live. If he had been able to have been seen sooner he would have had a good chance to live.

If what your surgery cost is more than what you pay in taxes, yes, someone else did pay for it with their taxes. "The government" paid using money from your fellow citizens.

This discussion sure meandered. Some made the key point, many others missed, that this is really an insurance issue, not a hospital issue. As some has said, the contract between the insurer and the providers no doubt included big discounts from the chargemaster, the list price the hospital (and perhaps other provider) charges. So the "negotiating" of prices has already happened.

The insured, the patient, agreed, in selecting an insurance plan, to pay a certain portion of the charges, the deductible in this case. Since it makes little sense for the insurer to pay all the charges to the hospital, and then bill the insured for the deductible, the insurer pays its part minus the deductible, which the insured pays directly to the hospital. What is to negotiate here? While you pay the hospital, it did not set the deductible. The insurer did.

Please folks, let us not confuse an uninsured person negotiating down from list price on the charge master with someone not happy with their share of insured expenses.

Let us also be aware of patient responsibility for out of network charges.

some people just don't seem to understand everything is paid for by someone, not the government. I tried to explain this to my cousin one time. She was talking about a routine procedure she had done every 3 months. I asked her if it was necessary and she admitted, no but it gave her piece of mind and she didn't have to pay for it. She was retired from the L.A school system. Her insurance paid it. When I tried to explain the tax payers are paying it went over her head. She is one that has had every test and procedure known to man kind cause no one has to pay according to her.

I agree this is a point that escapes so many people. The government is broke. The government has no money because it does not produce goods and services for anyone to purchase. The government only takes money from some people and gives it to other people.
