Does anyone else deal with places where you can't understand the admin folks? Like they're at the end of a long pipe with low volume, or worse? Finding this at multiple places.

Maybe you need to turn up the volume on your phone? Get your hearing tested? Hearing loss can often only be noticed in certain situations like a crowd, in a theater, on the phone.

This is a pretty offensive reply. You think people are that stupid? Maybe you need to turn up the volume of your thought processes. Rather, I think the problem arises with bad VOIP systems.

If you are dealing with an admin type, they are probably typing while they have you on speakerphone. I would politely ask if they do and then just tell them they sound muffled and you cannot understand them.

They may also be using a headset and not have the microphone placed correctly or it's gone bad.

Thanks. That's more reasonable answer. They must put the mic at the back of their head. I suspect, though, that the problem is more than that, since even when I ask them to speak more clearly, not much changes.

?????? A simple suggestion to turn up the volume when you can't hear someone is offensive? Why? What's wrong with checking your hearing? Guess I am stupid

Why?
- it does not happen with other callers. I hear them with no problem
- Any sentient person would check the volume.
- A family member is a specialist in speech and hearing problems...

Please give folks a little credit. Do you really think anyone would 1. forget volume control or 2. would have no knowledge of hearing limitations?

there are a lot of people, especially older ones that do not know about volume control, and that think there is nothing wrong with their hearing, [and how are we suppose to know you have a relative that is a hearing specialist?].

I don't think the first answer was offensive or rude at all, but your reaction was.

As to the problem itself. I believe the admin person being on speaker phone is likely the problem in some cases. Other than that if the office is using a cheap source of VOIP phone, then there is nothing the admin person can do about that.

However, since you state this is a vent. I guess you are not looking for answers.

What does "lots of people" mean? Do you have evidence for such a claim? BTW, I find it hard to believe any adult does not know about "volume control". Maybe on a phone, but most phones are full volume by default, which suggest that "older people" that don't know volume control also can't avail themselves of the simplistic solution offered.

Why would it matter that I'm related to a hearing specialist? Would folks be more reasonable in their replies? Doubt it.

Older people are the only ones yelling: "There's too much background noise where you are, I can hear everyone! It makes my phone skip! " And they're very angry about it, as if the person they're calling is supposed to know ahead of time: "hey everyone, no talking or moving now, Walter Johnson is calling and he's got no hearing problems at all, it's you noisy bastards around me, just stop breathing. "
