A few things that helped me with the acid were...

Not eating after 6pm

Eat the aboved diet or close to it

Red Meat is very bad (I cant eat ANY now)

Elevate your head when you sleep helps but you dont need to do this if you are eating right and not eating after 6pm.

Stress WILL make it worse

If you happen to eat the wrong foods or eat too late and you need something to push it down...I USE Acid Defense from THE MAKERS DIET

The makers diet saved my life instead of having to get surgery..Yeah, 2 years ago I laughed at this helping me but the doctors could not help me so I tried changing my diet like this and it worked!

There is also a drink called GT's Kombucha. It is very acidic but it will help you digest everything you eat!

I hope this can help you!
Thank you very much for this information!

I'm curious though, have you ever woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't breathe?

I suffered with nearly debilitating acid reflux, even had to give up my beloved coffee, caffeine, favorite foods, etc., UNTIL (and this will sound so benign to everyone) I tried GINGER! One cup of ginger tea FIRST THING in the a.m. before anything else, and the fires, stomach pain, swallowing trouble, etc., is ALL GONE! If it is acid reflux, Ginger Root Tea (get from a natural food store or health food store) is the answer! Just make sure that it is nothing but ginger root. Don't get a mix of things. I discovered it through online research, and I couldn't believe it, either, but it so worked and worked immediately. If you are having a flare-up, brew up a strong pot of it, and sip it all day and night long until you are feeling better. Leave the bags in the pot or a bag of it in your cup. Drink it as strong as you can handle it. Ginger has a "bite" to it, and you might not like the taste, but you will LOVE it for the relief that it gives you. It will only take one cup a day to maintain relief, but do it first thing in the a.m. before drinking or eating anything else.

Good luck!

Default first time w/acid reflux

last night I woke at 1am and could not breathe. Like something was in my throat, and i was gasping for air. It happened a few weeks ago, but not as bad. when i was finally able to breathe, i thought i needed to vomit, but nothing. i was white as a ghost and scared to death! when i finally calmed down and tried to go back to sleep, i was scared it would happen again. I don't have heartburn or any of the other symptoms for this. any suggestions would help. does diet work for this? thanks

not sure if its reflux or not.. but it sounds like it...
i think you may want to consult your doctor to rule out any more serious disorders.
for reflux...
i know there are a lot of do's and don'ts...
here is another aspect to look at...
most people with acid reflux do not have an overly acidic stomach. so taking ant acids actually may add to the problem.. not fix it. yes, it will make it feel better at the time, but this is symptom management, while adding to the problem. the most common underlying problem is TOO LITTLE stomach acid... its called hypochlorhydria.. drinking plenty of water or taking anti acides may make it feel better, but it dilutes the acid futher causing digestive problems. drinking with your meals also will cause the stomach to be filled closer to the top, and since the problem is partially due to a weak or relaxed cardiac sphincter muscle.. acid more easily burns the [SIZE=-1]esophagus.
i agree with some of the suggestions in regards to not eating before laying down for that reason. also certain foods relax the cardiac sphincter muscle.. like tomatoes, and coffee... so you may want to be mindful of that as well.
i would check to see if you have weakened stomach acid first.
if you do, that could be the underlying problem, and will lead to dysbiosis and/or leaky gut syndrome, pernicious anemia, lack of energy, more prone to bacterial or parasitic invasion..
but first.. rule out any more serious disorders by talking to your physician..
hope this helps

I agree!!! Drrick would you suggest digestive enzymes to aid these problems? I have heard many people complaining about the acid getting worse and worse and having to go on stronger meds.

That sounds more like a panic attack. (I have GERD and anxiety)

I have a few questions for you regarding waking up and not being able to breathe. I hate to ask but one of the reasons for sleep apnea is being overweight which also causes snoring which leads to sleep apnea. Both my brother and husband have sleep apnea and my brother also has acid reflux and has to have his throat checked every year because it can possibly lead to more serious issues. They both are overweight and snore and have to wear a breathing device or they could stop breathing for too long in the middle of the night and not wake up. If you have any of these issues, especially snoring you should go to a sleep clinic where they can measure your breathing, etc. It could save your life.

I had acid reflux for a number of years. I learned that the aspirin was upsetting my stomach and causing it, but I am sure there were other issues as well. But I began drinking water with 1/2 T. raw vinegar in it along with honey to taste. It needs to be raw vingegar. It helped, and over time it went away. I seldom drink the vinegar/water anymore but I should just because it is healthy.

i think digestive enzymes are a good idea in general. given that... i think its not a bad idea to try. the vinegar idea is also not bad, since, according to chinese medicine, it soothes the liver... in chinese medicine, we would say a congested liver, due to stress or anxiety, can cause digestive problems. many people also do notice a correlation between acid reflux/GERD and anxiety because one can make you more prone to the other. the feeling of acid reflux.. the ascending of qi, or energy, or what ever you wish to call it.. tends to make you feel more anxious, and more panicy.. and the reverse is true as well. that is why most of the time, in clinic, a D.O.M. will treat anxiety along with the acid reflux.
this is why taking a multi prong approach is best... and not just focusing on the acidic feeling... although that may be part of the treatment, it should not be the only part. the acid reflux is only a symptom of the underlying imbalance. enzymes can help, apple cider vinegar can help, but finding out what your body is telling you is usually the best approach, and will give you the best results.

Drrick- What kind of training does a DOM have to go through and where are the schools?
