a DOM is just a doctor of oriental medicine... most of us have masters degrees, although now they are finally finishing up on PHD programs and working doctorate programs.
the schools are all over the US (well, all over the world actually)
as far as the training goes... we study the meridians of the body, the circulation of the meridians as well as how imbalances in the meridians affect the organs, and the functioning of the body.
we also study herbology (very different than western herbs though) and diet food therapy (how foods affect health and function)
lifestyle modifications (how different activities affect both physical and functionality of the body) and maniual manipulation.
most people in my field focus on acupuncture itself... although there is quite a lot of work to be done well before, and well after the needles. this is where i focus my practice. i use a lab to do a metabolic test, to uncover imbalances in the body's metabolic process. Using this information, i can help the person made lifestyle or dietary modifications to restore function.
thanks for asking.... if i can be of help, just ask

I seldom drink the vinegar/water anymore but I should just because it is healthy.
Good advice. Definitely helps. I use Bragg's raw apple cider vinegar according to directions on the bottle. Aloe juice may also help.

Also, sleeping on your left side as opposed to the right will minimize reflux.

I couldn't breathe out of my nose OR mouth! I had to force myself to suck in REAL HARD to get air in, then I had to cough to get air back out! I also had a sour taste and burning in my throat. I was finally able to breathe normally after a minute or two, but the burning was still there for quite a while.
I don't know if to think this is acid reflux (as I have never heard of it causing trouble breathing) or sleep apnea or something else?

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? This really scared me! I almost don't want to go to bed tonight because of it!

Thanks to anyone with any advice or input
Something folks haven't mentioned here but I have experienced unfortunately. If you are running your heat or other gas appliances, you may need to have your home checked for carbon monoxide. What you describe is very common in low-level carbon monoxide poisoning (the non-fatal exposure). I was having this same problem at night and feeling slight fatigue when I spent the day in my home (usually at work during day). Since I do experience reflux, I thought I was just having a bad bout (so did my doctor). I went through several tests and even had a few breathing treatment due to slightly low O2 in the blood. It got so bad one morning I had to call an ambulance. Of course, once removed to fresh air, I started to improve rapidly. A few weeks after this, something in my HVAC started leaking through my ceiling and when the repair man went up, he checked my heat as well and found a crack in the unit which he showed me. He told me that I was one lucky person to have survived this. My doctor concurred that carbon monoxide poisoning was the probable cause of the symptoms. I have felt great even with the occassional reflux ever since. Believe me, that was a scary time. I thought I would die not being able to catch my breathe.
