Are you under any amount of unnessary stress that would trigger this off?

Nothing that I'm aware of or out of the ordinary.Just when you think you're winning the battle it knocks you on your butt. I plan on winning this battle it's just alot harder than it seems.

I totally agree with you mystree. I have said those same words you just said. It is definetly a lot harder than people think it is.
Yesterday, my youngest daughter had her first panic attack. I swear this is such BS. This disorder has hit now, both my daughters!!! I am soo mad . So with her, I took her on a long walk and explained that what she is feeling is normal for someone with this disorder. But I swear I wont let it take over her life. My other daughter, I was able to get help for her right away, she is now living a normal life, no meds or anything. She goes to the gym everyday and works off any built up stress. For her it was all she needed. Now for my younger daughter, I have already gotten her all the suppliments she can take, and we are going to work on a workout schedule for her too, and see if we cant nip this in the bud for her as well.
It sucks when you see your kid suffer with this crappy disorder. We are all going to the beach today, and just unwind. It will be good for her to just relax. It broke my heart yesterday to see her all shaking and crying, and over breathing . Atleast this is one area where I know how to really help her. Its just sad is all.
Everyone try to have a great and peaceful day.

Hi Suzet,
I think that my mom often gets upset because she feels like she "passed" her panic disorder to me in fact she even told my doctor that. At first when I got panic in my 20's I was so mad because I thought that after watching her I could make myself not have it. Of course I now know it's not true. We now support each other as our panic seems to hit at different times so it's nice to have that support and understanding. Unfortunately my dad didn't understand it and I think it was a big reason for their divorce when I was a teenager.
Your daughter(s) are lucky to have you to talk to and for your support. I truly beleive that a person who hasn't walked in another shoes can truly understand any type of illness/disorder/disease.
I hope that you have a good week!

I'm sorry to hear that.Hopefully it will help you having so much knowledge on the disorder. One thing to keep in mind is the younger the person the more resiliant they seem to be to learn what to do. Such as changing their thinking (positive thoughts) Where we are older and old habits are hard to break,We are just plain stubborn...lol.
Hopefully getting her involved in other activities will help.Just let loose and be young and have fun.I think thats what we all need to do,the problem is it has been so long I've forgotten how to really have fun,it's sad really.I wonder if there is a thread on how to really have fun.

Hello, all. I am sorry that I haven't been around for the last week. My DH needs surgery again this Tuesday and last week we decided to take an impromtu vacation to the beach. It helped him to relax a bit and we did get to spend some quiet time together.
I know what you are all talking about when you see your daughters in the same clutches of anxiety/panic disorder that you have suffered with. We tend to go through the guilt thing so needlessly. Just as we have had no control over our genes, we certainly cannot control what genes our children are blessed with. For all we know, our husbands genetic contribution may have made the soup turn into panic stew for our children.
So, we have to let that go right away. My father was always concerned that I had panic attacks because he did as well. His were conquered much the same way that I have gained control over mine. Lots of effort and years of desensitizing ourselves to the situations that seem to trigger the attacks. The ***** in this armour is that sometimes there doesn't seem to be any apparent trigger and one just hits out of the blue, like yours did, mystree.
Lindsay, it is going to be a struggle for you for awhile without Rufus in your life. I guess when we suffer such a terrible loss, it is best to try to focus on all of the good things in life and try to keep the sad ones as a memory to tuck into the pocket by our hearts. I hope with time that you do feel more at peace.
Suzet and clb, I too feel angry and hurt that my children (3 of the 4) have experienced panic/anxiety disorder. The worst part of this is that they are male and it seems to be more difficult for men to accept and deal with this disorder than women. Afterall, a man isn't afraid of anything!! What a shame that they have to carry that burden on top of the anxiety disorder. Two of them have learned to handle their events and stay pretty much in control. My one son, however, is distraught lately about this ruining his life, his career opportunities and his ability to go back to college. He just started seeing a new psychologist last week and the first thing the doctor did was to write a RX and tell my son to come back in a month. DRAT!! Talk to him. Help him see that he has done nothing wrong to bring this on himself. Let him understand that people do survive these attacks and recover. I talk to my son almost everyday and I know that it helps, but he still feels that I am a "Mom" and not a doctor, so he believes I will say whatever he "needs" to hear. I do my best. The fact that he is a sufferer of this disorder is worse than the fact that most of my youth was wasted on this disorder. I certainly don't want him to be struggling into his 40s and 50s with it.
Well, another new week - new challenges. I will try to get back as the week goes on depending on hubby's needs after his surgery on Tues. I do hope you all have a good week and I think about you all everyday and keep you in my prayers. We all need someone who cares about our lives and is there to listen. I am a good listener - and talker.

You know whats funny, when I look at pictures of him or other cats that are the same coloring, it makes me feel more at peace.
I think his personality was just so sweet, and he was so even tempered, calm that he passed that along to me. My Rufus gave me such a wonderful gift. Somehow, just his presence soothed me.
I just have to work on soothing myself another way.

Lindsay, it sounds to me that the calm and soothing you got from Rufus is continuing through your sweet memories of him. You have so much to hang onto with this endearing pet that I wouldn't be surprised if he couldn't be your visual when you feel anxiety coming your way.
Some people imagine themselves on a sandy beach listening to the surf, others at a mountain retreat with soft breezes and birds happily chirping. You might think of stroking Rufus and listening to him purr next to you. All of these visuals can have a wonderful calming effect without them really taking place at all.
It's wonderful to be able to hang onto memories of those that are no longer with us on this earth. They continue to be special through the remembrances that we treasure.

I had to speak with my brothers lawyer regarding a long drawn out legal problem (there is a thread on it in the Relationship forum) and it had me really stressing. I didn't have a panic attack but it got to me. I am still worrying about it today.
We will see how this goes, I want this family BS over so I can cut them out of my life and I can have a NORMAL life.
I have been rearranging the furniture in my house over the last couple days and that has taken my mind off of things to an extent.

Question for you all and that is i know alot of you have anxiety/panic attacks and i'm sure some of you have Insomnia because of it. Does your anti anxiety meds in themselves help you sleep or do you need an Insomnia med also to help. I still am having bad stress issues and suffer from Insomnia off and on and not sure what meds i should try if i go to the family practice doc as i'm getting down by sleeping an hour or two everynite.
Great thread Suzet !
