Has anyone been diagnosed with an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) and had the endovasular procedure? My father just had open heart surgery and an AAA was discovered. He has been recommended to have the endovascular surgery as opposed to the abdominal surgery. We are researching the stents used in this surgery. Anyone with any info to help in the researching is much appreciated.
My grandfather had this type of procedure, and he did very well! The less invasive procedures tend to make recovery easier.
If you Google "Endovascular Surgery", there were some very reassuring and informative articles, particularly by Mayo Clinic and Strong Health.
Since you obviously have questions about the stent, I recommend that you talk to your father's surgeon. We just made sure that we had a surgeon whom we could trust to choose the best repair materials available. With all the medical recalls as of late, surely the doctor will be more than happy to discuss what he or she wants to use on your father and why. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Use caution when researching on the internet as not everything out there is up to date or accurate. The best doctors stay on top of the latest information and developments. I have even had doctors direct me to credible sources or print off information for me to alleviate my concerns. I remember that my grandfather's doctor even showed us the tube and explained it in great detail. By the time he was finished, we were all very informed and reassured.
We have definately been doing research. As with all searches we seem to end up in the same information. Most information is generalized which helps with the obvious questions. He came home on Monday of this week and Wednesday was one week after surgery. He will definately discuss all his options with his doctors. He is consurned as anyone would be with the surgery and the possible complications that could arise afterwards. Thank you again for your well wishes.
G4inMO - Just remember that this can be genetic and you should be check yearly, (via sonagram) from the age of 50, as should everyone in your family. My father had one and had to have surgery. Unfortunately he was only with us a few short months after that - best of luck to your father.
