Considering the state of the flight industry, I'm sitting here with my mouth open, imagining what it will be like for you. Having recently heard of an instance where an 8-year-old was first told she'd have to sit apart from her parent because of seating issues, then put off the flight w/o her parent being told and left to wander the airport, a person with a medical problem will most likely face zero help.

Many sympathies from me. I suffered sciatica pains; it took 3 months of treatments (chiropractor/holistic care) to relieve me of that agony. I thought I'd suffered pain with surgery, with a broken ankle ... sciatica can have you begging to be put out of your misery. Before I began treatments with my chiro-, I had this twerp of a doctor prescribe mild pain pills and steroids. He clearly thought the problem was not that bad, grabbing my leg and twisting it; each pull accompanied by a comment "how bad does this hurt?" I finally told him I was going to show him how bad it hurt if he didn't stop.

All I can offer is sympathy. I hesitate to say what you should do, except go through whatever is available in the medical community. For each person I've spoken to there's been a different treatment which they claim brought relief. My sister had sciatica at the same time I did (we called each other daily to compare the readings of our Pain O'Meters ) and her remedy was totally different than mine. She went through a course of epidural shots. When I gasped and said "no way!", imagining having a needle stuck in my back, she replied "hun, when you're in that much pain, you don't even feel the needle". I had to concur since there were a few instances when I was by myself and going to the bathroom meant slipping down to the floor and dragging myself to the bathroom on my side.

I told my spouse "if this ever comes back, it's gonna be morphine or a gun. I just can't deal with that level of pain again."

Good luck on your treatment. You sure aren't alone

Its helped by changing position but its worsened when I put my feet up on the hassock. It hurts to sit in a chair. Does anyone know if this is the way sciatica starts? I have a bad back with degenerative disc disease, scoliosis and low back pain. Oh, I've had it once before, myself. It hurts!!! I'm an avid runner/jogger and I was jogging a 5K run and I guess I was going a little too fast. Well, about a couple of hours later (after I was done) I felt this numbness up to my butt area to the bottom of my foot (on my left side). Damn, it hurt too!

I was reading up on it and it was because of my running shoes and the way I was running. I had corrected them since (new, better, top of the line running shoes and learned a better technique since). I haven't had it since.

I agree about the shoes! I got sciatica from wearing VERY high heels nearly every day. I stopped that silliness and the pain went away. I still get it every now and then, but if I wear hiking boots for a couple of days it usually knocks it right out. I doubt this is common, but just an anecdotal story.

I have had sciatica off and on since being pregnant and after a car accident. Going to the chiropractor really helped me immensely. He gave me supplements to take too, Manganese, I think? But I was breastfeeding and did not want to take anything, so I don't know if they help or not.

Big ditto. Go to a doctor.

I had a ruptured disc about ten years ago. EXTREMELY painful on plane rides and while stuck in traffic (literally used to cry if traffic was bad). Had to get a laptop at work, so I could work lying on the floor on my stomach. It was too painful to sit for any length of time.

Even though I was skeptical, a good chiropractor delivered minor relief-- had to go every couple of days. The correct stretches, sitting and sleeping positions are all very important.

My pain was so extreme that I couldn't fall asleep unless I was completely exhausted. And when I wasn't exhausted anymore (after about 3-4 hours sleep) the pain would wake me up again. Awful.

Finally had surgery. When I woke up from it, I started crying because it was the first time in 4 months that I hadn't woken up in pain. It was terrific. Haven't had much problem since, but am very cautious to this day about sitting right, not overexerting and doing stretches if I feel any strain.

GO TO A DOCTOR. GET YOUR RECOVERY GOING.

Hi, I just read your message about what you are going through, there is not a day go by that I am not in pain I HATE IT!!!!!!!!! I am 41 and I was in a bad car wreck 19 years ago they did not opperate because they said that it I would not be able to walk so at first I could deal with the pain and over the past 10 years it has just gotten so bad the doctors said that I have the back of an 80 year old person. I have Grand kids and 4 kids of my own they range from the ages of 14,15,19,& 23. I can't make plans and I know what you are going through taking that kind of meds tell your Doctor that you are alergic of codine so they will give you something to help your pain and not make you feel like your skin is crawling. And if your back is like mine DO NOT GO TO AN CHIPRACTIOR I did and it made the pain like 3 times worse. Go to Google on your computer and ask for pain management in the state you live in and it will bring up the doctors. I wish you the best of luck I have to take methadone for mine that is the only thing that I found that helps. Best of luck.

I agree going with a pain mngmt specialist, accupnct.

My mother had her back fused for the same reasons. It improved everything for her case.
I also got her taking a multi, fish oil and gluco/msm. She said that helped everything all over.

Lose any extra weight if you can. Large chests or guts can put addition strain on the back. Speaking with a nutritionist will help your health overall so add that to the fixings list.

I hope you feel better.

Default Severe Back Pain and what the doctor said

So, I went to see a doctor yesterday. Note that in the past 10 years, I can count on one hand how many times I've been to a doctor. I just don't go if I don't absolutely have to.
Anyway, about three weeks ago, I injured by back - I think while putting away bales of hay. Ever since then it has increasingly gotten worse and so, I finally caved and went to the doctor.

The doctor gave me Skalaxin (muscle relaxer) and order for an xray and told me to continue taking Motrin (anti-inflammatory). Ok fine.

I know my body well enough to know that something is wrong. I know from experience that an xray won't show anything. He basically told me that insurance companies have gotten a lot more strict and that he won't order an MRI unless I start to have numbness in my lower extremeties.

I feel strongly that I need the MRI - even with a complete day of 800 mg muscle relaxers - I took 3 yesterday and 1 this morning - I'm still in a lot of pain.

How can I get the MRI???

So you start feeling numbness in your lower extremeties! Do whatever it takes. That is just stupid that the insurance won't do an MRI. What are they waiting for--your condition to worsen, which it will most likely do! You know your body better then any Dr. What has happened to preventive health care? My sister has been dealing with a severe infection she got from the hospital during a hip replacement and it's been a joke the way they have gone about trying to clear it up. She's been in and out of the hospital several times in the last few months. Now they are having to keep the wound open and let it drain plus going back in and cleaning it out every other day! Why? Because they didn't do it right in the beginning. Don't wait for your back to get worse---feel that numbness!! And you are right...back injuries often will not show up on and X-ray. Good luck!

Oh I know! I work IN the medical field!! Exactly what he told me is this: I have to have the pain, take the meds, if not better on meds, go to physical therapy, if no success with physical therapy then he'll order an MRI. Bah! I want it now, I think I will lie and say I'm having numbness just so that I can get what I need.
Terrible that we need to go that route but insurance has made it nearly impossible to get what you need.

Anyhoo, thanks for the encouragement!!!
