any recent injuries or did it just all of a sudden start? Alot of times physicians will try you on muscle relaxers/PT. Do plain films, but depending upon your physical symptoms skip that and go straight to MRI. Ins co dont like that, not fun for folks like me who have to get the MRI authorized disc herniation, bulge, spinal stenosis. Are you smptomatic in any other areas such as your legs?

Sorry I haven't been responding.
But, I am in good shape. I would say my back started hurting around three months ago. And it's not as if it hurts all the time. . only when I jump and run. And I find it wierd, because I am a really good runner.
I think I may have a muscle spasm or something.. I looked up some stuff online, but I'm not sure.

No recent injuries. I DO carry my bookbag on my left shoulder, if that may have anything to do with it.

You just hit the nail on the head.

Whatever you do, unless you want problems don't carry a bookbag on your shoulder. Besides throwing your back out of whack it can give you serious rotator cuff issues.

I'd use a luggage cart for your books. If you don't do that then carry the bag in your hands. A cart is easier.

Yeah, I actually spent about 6 weeks without pain (God I forgot how good that felt!) then Celebrex got pulled.

I'm still looking for relief and believe it or not, the best I've found so far is Aleve. Doesn't knock it all down, but it comes close.

My wife had her left thumb torn completely out of the socket while pulling a cart (two wheeled). It tore the tendons (muscles?) so bad the had to cut some out of her forearm and sew them in a loop around the thumb joint to keep it from falling out.

The wheel got caught on some ice and the cart flipped, taking her thumb with it.

Go to your HCP! It more than likely is NOT a spasm. ***mother shaking her index finger at petulant poster***

All the suggestions are good but the first thing I would do is get the doctor to order a MRI, especially if you're NOT at that age where lower back pain is "expected".

After you get those results, then you can go about the best game plan.

Runners have been known to hurt their back just because they're running on the wrong pavement. So, stop running until you rule out any major issues.

Default chronic back pain

Hi to all. I live in a world of pain. I have had two back operations. The first at age 23, the second at age 40. I worked for 2 years after my last surgery, and that was it for me. I am almost 60 now. Like I said, I am always in extreme pain. I have tried everything in the book. Nothing will work for me. Pills used to help a bit, but do nothing for me now. By my own research I found two meds that do help. Oxycodone and tramadol. I can't take them because I am allergic to them. Even one pill of either med will make me itch for almost two days. Like I said, I am almost 60 and I have a mindset of a 30 year old. I don't know what to do. I have used 3 different types of beds. I don't know what else too say. All my recent tests show massive degeneration of all my discs, except my neck. Severe buildup of scar tissue from my previous operations, and the good old spinal stenosis is back with a vengence. If anyone has ANY kind of suggestion, I would love to hear it. There has to be others like me. Can someone help? My Doctors can't. Take care, skitow.

I can sympathize with you. I am 37 and have had 4 back surgeries. First when I was 22, second when I was 25, third and fourth when I was 34 (2 surgeries in a 1 month period). Luckily, OTC meds are all that I need to take, but sometimes I feel like I need a lot more. I have 2 children (6 and 5) and refuse to take any narcotics while they are so young. I basically get by.

You sound like you should go to a pain management doctor. At one point, I was thinking about having a pain pump installed under my skin. The catheter goes from the pump to your spine (I think), and you are delivered premeasured amounts of medication at a predetermined times. I think usually it is morphine that they use. Decided against it because of insurance. Maybe something like that would be an option for you.

These days, so many people use and abuse medications. The most important thing is to find a doctor you are comfortable with and one who can help you. Good Luck!
