I had an injection done yesterday. I was also skeptical but after 4 months I was OVER it. I was told all of the same things however, I had no pain at the injection site so far and woke up with much less pain than usual. It was becoming unbearable for me and I wasn’t a able to do my daily tasks and with 2 children at home that can be rough. My Dr told me that after being hit by a semi in a vehicle collision and havin zero prior issues with my hand that I tweaked it somehow during the accident. I was told I have trigger thumb, carpal tunnel, AND De Quervaines syndrome. So I got triple whammied. Lol. I’m cautiously optimistic that the injection will help for me but was warned that it may not. So far I have not had any sever pain (not like before) and the injection itself did not hurt or burn for me. My Dr numbed me up pretty good. Hope this helps. Good luck to you!

Ouch, did you read thru the others here who posted about these injections. There are pros/cons to these. I think I had 2 in my lifetime and they did not help me...maybe temporary but that's it. You can find a lot online about the pros/cons of these injections. Hope your pain lessens.

Not sure why they couldn't pull up those records as it was at the same place. I told him that Dr. had said I'd feel a pinch but he hadn't told me it would burn and I instinctively pulled my hand away... - I guess this one in the deep thumb base might be worse? Honestly, he scared me.
I had I think 2 fingers over the years that "locked" up and they eventually healed or whatever they had to do on their own. I had cortisone twice I think and maybe both in knee and never again. They did nothing and maybe made things worse.

It happened to me when I had those injections, the Doctor said I had a 'hot nerve' and said that's why it hurt so bad, as I remember (and it was like 30 years ago) after a day or so my thumb felt better than it had in a long time, but the injections only last so long -eventually I had to have surgery

Did you have injections for trigger thumb or CMC arthritis of the thumb?

Both types of injections can be pretty painful for different reasons.

The CMC injection is into a very small joint and the pressure of injected fluid into such a small space is what usually gets people, many folks I have injected have the exact same reaction you describe of almost wanting to vomit.

A trigger thumb injection is painful because the injection is into a tendon sheath and there is often resistance felt when pushing the fluid along this potential space.

Despite the temporary discomfort, and it is only temporary, both injections tend to be VERY effective for the respective conditions they are used to treat.

I wouldn't listen to folks who tell you otherwise that really don't understand the mechanics of these conditions.

In the case of a trigger thumb, the injection can effectively CURE the problem close to 70% of the time, something no dip or cream will accomplish.

For CMC arthritis, while the injections don't cure the problem they often bring great relief for months at a time and can prolong the need for surgery with little to no risk.

I've been giving these types of injections for 25 years and can testify to their effectiveness and safety.

Amen. Those "I'm-not-a-doctor-but-I-play-one-on-C-D" type posts can be so irritating.

But thanks to you and suzy for all your knowledgeable advice.

Three months ago, I had a cortisone injection on my right palm. The pain right after the injection persisted for nearly ten days to 2 weeks. It helps but now my middle trigger finger is stiff, and when I write or clench my right fist the middle finger is painful. Even simple chores like pressing hair clips and peeling fruits are difficult.

I will be seeing my specialist doctor soon to get a second cortisone injection. Does anyone know if the injection will make my trigger finger even stiffer? Any information and/or advice from you all will be greatly appreciated.

I was told that after three injections, if my trigger finger is not cured, the specialist doctor will operate on my right hand. I am hoping that I do not have to go that route.

I've had a couple in my long life and they did nothing, more damage than good I believe and that's from so much that I hear from some MD's and also in the research I've done. No more for me.
