I would recomend her seeing a good doctor and having an MRI done. If it is DDD with a pinched nerve it can get worse and start to spasm and trust me that is awful. I am 45 and have Cervical DDD and stenosis I had similar symptoms and went into spasms and lost the use of my right arm, ended up having C4-C6 worked on. I still am having issues due to the DDD. I am on Vicodin myself, there is no reason to live in pain when you don't have too but I do agree with the other postings that your mom will need to find the right medication for her so that she doesn't fall or is light headed due to the drugs.
