Unfortunately, it is usually an indication of uterine cancer...she needs to be seen by a different doctor right away.

I have been in menopause for one and a half years. I started having light bleeding now for one month. I had an Ultra Sound that showed lots of fibroids and a 1/2 inch cyst on one ovary and a smaller cyst on the other. I am in a lot of pain. I have to put a hot pad on the inside my undies when going out. If at home I sit with a hot pad. My Dr. prescribed taking naproxen sodium 550 2x a day. I am still in pain.
I also had a biopsy of my uterus which was fine and the lining is fine. My Dr. said if it doesn't go away she could only do a hysterectomy because the fibroids where so big and surrounding my uterus. What do you think?

Fibroids usually do not cause symptoms after menopause. If anything, they tend to shrink. So the question is what is different about this month. It might be as simple as your having produced a couple of egg follicles one more time. That would account for the small cysts, too: egg follicles look like the cysts you describe. Estrogen from the egg follicles could cause the bleeding and the pain. If that is what happened, then the symptoms should get better if you ride it out for a few weeks, I am assuming you are not taking any hormone medications.

If you do not get better, your doctor can check a hormone called FSH to confirm you are indeed postmenopausal. If the FSH is high, that means your estrogen levels are low.

At that point, you do have options other than hysterectomy --- although most of the women I know who have had it done tell me their only regret is not doing it sooner.

There are medications that can be used:

Medical Treatments for Fibroids

A procedure called uterine artery embolization, which is actually performed by a radiologist:

Treatments geared toward treating heavy bleeding might not be as helpful in your situation, where the major problem is pain.

If your doctor only wants to discuss hysterectomy, get another opinion. That never hurts.
