I went from being an easy size 0 to obesity after having kids, starting in my late 20s. I gained the standard 30 lbs during each pregnancy, but couldn't lose any of it afterward (not even the weights of the actual babies, grr!). Last year I thought I had a handle on my weight, but now it's crept back up some. It feels like a losing battle. Before kids, being thin was effortless. Makes me wonder if the pregnancy hormones or the stress of raising kids is part of the blame.
My advice is to appreciate what you have now and to maintain healthy eating/exercise habits. Don't allow the increasing complexity of life to stand in the way of your health as you get older.
I'm 49 an my metabolism slowed down in my mid twenties. Then I stopped eating grains and legumes. Now I'm as hyper as a 14 year old boy........... drives my wife crazy .
It was at about 35 for me. However, I've found that you're not doomed to get fat as you get older. You just have to start watching what you eat and change your diet and lifestyle. I know, it's easier said then done, but I've been able to do it and maintain my college weight.
Not sure that it has. I'm 62 yo male and haven't gained weight over that at age 25. Actually have lost a few pounds. Body fat still fairly low, probably lower than age 25.
It's hard to say. I recall gaining some weight at 34ish but I wasn't working out and was eating whatever i wanted. I was about 130. I had my kids at 35 and 37, nursed both of them and was also working full time. I would pump at work. That combined with nursing and being busy got me down to about 123. I stayed that way until I got a new job that had more snacks and less walking, got back up to 130. Then the pandemic hit and I was on my couch working and not doing much except being in the house. I got up to 145. The past month or so I've picked up some better habits. I'm using my elliptical every day, I've cut out alcohol and trying to eat better. I know it will take some time to lose weight and that's ok.
Not yet. I'll be 52 this year and weigh 120, which is less than when I was in my 20s, although some of that is attributable to lost muscle weight. I get more cardio than strength exercise these days and I need to turn that around.
I'm also somewhat more careful about what I eat than I was when younger, but for the most part I just don't seem to be someone who tends to put on weight. I've been hearing for the past 25 years that my metabolism would shut down when I hit 30, 40, 45, 50... and it hasn't happened.
I'm 61 its a life long battle.
My parents were both overweight and my one sibling and I have both been up and down with our weight but have learned to fight back against our genetics.
My only easy time of control was about 16 through late 20s, adolescent hormones combined with a desire to exercise and increase activity were effective. I could eat pretty much what I wanted.
Each decade seems to get a bit harder with noticabely smaller and fewer meals. I have been up and down a few times by as much as 50 lbs.
I thought I was at my slowest metabolically in my 50s but entering my 60s I think even slower
I now do quite well on one meal a day alone around 2 to 4pm occasionally with a small evening second meal or snack.
**Also be aware of medication metabolism which is slower as we age so longer to take effect and longer to metabolize.
Around age 50 for me (menopause). I gained a lot of weight with both of my children but lost it easily both times. I maintained the same weight with little to no exercise until I hit 50. Then I gained 40 lbs like overnight. I’ve been able to get back to my goal weigh and maintain it by watching what eat and exercising (cardio and weights) 5 days a week. I’m almost 63.
