"To get enough B12 (you require only a small amount-2.4 micrograms-per day) try to eat B12-fortified foods like soymilk, and cereal."

(from a sports medicine site for vegan/vegetarian athletes)

The mother in that article obviously was not eating a healthy diet. You can be very healthy on a vegan diet.

I know someone who has two small children (one still nursing), and the only dairy she eats is a small amount of Feta cheese... she's otherwise vegan. Her kids are big and healthy... her baby is CHUBBY, as a matter of fact... and all he drinks is her milk. He's about 3 months old now. The other child is about 3 and 1/2 yrs.

Yes, you can be very healthy on a vegan diet, but this infant was 11 months old. Not 3 months old. A 3-month old can thrive on breastmilk exclusively. An 11-month old can still drink breastmilk, but there isn't enough milk in one person's breasts to adequately feed an 11-month old baby. ESPECIALLY if mommy's idea of "vegan" eating also precludes synthetic supplements - which would mean mom isn't getting that B12 she needs, and isn't passing it to her son. Baby needs MORE FOOD than what mommy's breast can provide exclusively. His mother starved him to death. The B12 deficiency was a symptom of that.

I still don't know where vegans get B12. The only place cobalamine exists is in animal meat.

It can be synthesized in a lab. Synthetic B12 is added as a supplement to soy products, among other things.

Synthetic B12 isn't really B12 then. It's cyanocobalamin. Cyonide !......... yum ! attached to cobalt.

Didn't spys take cyonide pills to kill themselves quickly to avoid interogation upon capture ????

The amount of cyanide in synthetic B12 is not enough to cause a problem. You can be exposed to cyanide through foods: Cassava (used to make tapioca), lima beans, and almonds, for example.
