they say I just had a stroke and lost the use of my left side for a couple of days--- they say my carotid arterys are clogged up -- the left is completely clogged and they can do nothing for it and the right side is 95% blocked-- the docs do not sound opportunistic here-- life sucks right now -- ok I let out some steam and it is noon somewhere so I am going to go get a drink

sorry to hear about your situation - i can only imagine how upsetting it must be.

you may or may not be aware that there are fairly standard protocols for the management of patients with carotid stenosis - the recommendations vary depending upon the degree of stenosis, and the presence or absence of symptoms (which clearly are present in your case).

the recommendations come from the Society for Vascular Surgery, and are published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, and should be fairly easily to access online. they cover things such as when surgery is appropriate, and medical management such as control of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and glucose. if you havent done so already, you may wish to discuss this with the specialist who is managing your case.

aside from all of this, i hope you have a sympathetic ear with whom you can talk about your situation. internalising it all, and trying to find the answers at the bottom of a bottle are unlikely to provide any sustained benefit.

i wish you the best of luck.

Did you or do you smoke?
Have you been exercising (cardio) at least four times a week most of your life?
Is your weight (%body fat) healthy?
Have you taken proactive steps to reduce stress?

If no, yes, yes, yes then I'd say you just have some bad luck or bad genes or something.

Sounds unusual that you lost the use of your left side just for a couple of days if it was a stroke?
What did your CT/MRI brain show?

Are they talking about stenting or surgery?

Drinking is not a good idea for a stroke victim.

Well, you might have good collateral flow from your vertebral/basilar arteries if this has been chronic. Did they want to do surgery on the right side or are they not going to do it because you had the stroke? There have been cases where people had both carotid arteries completely occluded and they are still functioning. I wouldn't start drinking just yet... unless the docs gave you a grim prognosis... You should find out all your options and see what other blood vessels are still open supplying your brain.

OP must have good collateral flow from posterior circulation, otherwise he wouldn't be posting on here with virtually no flow through either carotid artery.

They won't touch the completely occluded one-intrvention is more likely to cause a stroke than leaving it alone. It won't cause a stroke at the moment because it's completely occluded.

I am sure that they'll want to mess with the other, but risks will be high and not sure I would be going for anything except risk factor modification.

risk factor modification might include things like lowering lipids, losing weight, exercising, stopping smoking, good control of blood pressure, tight control of diabetes etc. basically anything which would contribute to worsening clogging of the arteries.
