My left eye had a problem for 3-4 where the inside corner of the eye was slightly itchy and there is a painful reddish bulge near there. There is nothing coming out of the eye.

I didn't know what to do Friday night so I went to a hospital ER and the doctor quickly said it's an infected tear duct and prescribed Cleocin, four times daily at 300mg. When I got the meds this morning it was Clindamycin. I've taken it twice with no improvement. There was slight diarrhea which may have been a side effect of the meds.

If it persists two more days I will see an eye specialist. I wonder what else I could try. I've read the common web pages about it.

The doctor mentioned it's not allergy related or else the irritation would be more widespread.

I also tried warm compresses at home, with no improvement. In fact it might have made it worse.

This morning my eye looks slightly worse than before. I mean the bulge around my eye.
But the pain and itching is slightly less.
If it's bad tomorrow I'll try another doctor. The slight diarrhea has continued. To be blunt, after I eat a small meal I "lost it" an hour later.

On Sunday night I went to an urgent care place and told them what's happening. The doctor said I could try Bactrim as well as the Clindamycin. I've taken it twice (once every 12 hours) and no change.

Tuesday morning I went to an eye specialist and he said I have an infected meibomian gland, which is in the eyelids. He gave me erythomycin ointment which helped the pain and itching.

He said he's not surprised the other antibiotics didn't help.

The only problem is, the red lump is still on my eyelid. I can only hope it will recede.

Does anyone know why the second doctor said I probably have a staph infection and prescribed Bactrim? I read some articles saying it's mostly for urinary tract infections. Why would he say it's likely a staph infection? I thought that was more an STD thing.

The infection is 90% healed now. I'm not sure if the meds had any effect as it might have been the ointment.

Staph is NOT primarily an STD thing. It is a very common type of infection.
