Medicinal value from things that "shouldn't produce any" - not sure . . . but sleep works wonders, as do healthy comfort foods, teas, etc.
It seems like people are posting what works for them, regardless of whether or not it "should" work (is an ancient or known natural remedy like peppermint or some of the other remedies mentioned).
If I feel like I might be getting a cold (such as at the start of a sore throat), I'll take 4 grams of vitamin C. So far for over a year it has worked every time.
I have chronic gastritis and whenever the symptoms occur (which is almost every day) I will take 3 pepcid ac 20mg (the brand, not generic) tablets with 4 simethicone 125 mg tablets. That's a rather high dose, so if you don't like playing risks you should consult your doctor before taking it (I'm quite sure a pharmacist would tell you the same thing). I found 2 omeprazole 20mg tablets daily will also work, however they lowered the natural defense of part of my immune system so I had to quit taking them.
I used to get canker sores frequently. I take 2 DGL licorice tablets once a day, Lysine 1,000 mg once a day and 3 vitamin B complex tablets once a day. I get them very rarely now, only when I bite my lip or when my immune system is compromised.
I feel like everything but the gastritis treatment could very well be placebo effect.
I get arthritic pain at times, and have noticed that caffeine helps with the pain! So did a little research and found this interesting article: High Caffeine And Joint Pain | LIVESTRONG.COM
Haha.. only if my parents knew.. I suffered from nausea quite a bit as a kid and would always be given TUMS instead of peppermint (the latter worked so much better.)
When I feel nauseous, like I am going to throw up, if I put a fresh slice of lemon on my tongue the feeling goes away. Sometimes I've just cut the lemon in half and licked the cut part. lol
When I have a bad headache, if I have something salty - like popcorn with salt or crackers with salt - my headache goes away.
Peppermint candy - especially the Bob's soft peppermint sticks - also helps with an upset stomach. Doesn't make it go away completely, but it helps quite a bit. Peppermint tea does not have the same effect.
While pregnant I had to closely watch my iron. My midwife and I found that a spoonful of Blackstrap Molasses every day worked wonders at keeping my iron up.
