About a week and a half ago, I suffered an injury to my pinky (little) finger playing basketball. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but it swelled up like crazy later in the night.

I assumed it was a jammed finger; a very common basketball injury. Now, I'm wondering if it's possible that the finger was dislocated. The bone feels very odd to me. While the pain and swelling has subsided significantly, I'm starting to worry about it. The only difference medically, it would seem, is that I should see a doctor for a dislocation, whereas, there's not much of a point to do so if it's merely jammed.

How would I know the difference? Would there be any obvious signs if I dislocated it?

Could be a sprain, could be a dislocation, could also be a fracture....

You should have it checked out and get an X-ray. I have seen fingers that were dislocated or fractured and not recognized because the person didn't come in to be seen right away. Can really limit your options in terms of what can be done if this is more than a sprain.
