From now on; don't take an appointment without a written appointment card. Been there; done that.

I'm in South Jersey; past Deptford- pain management is hard to get into (3+ month wait) & you can waste a whole day with an appointment. Some you wait for 3 hours; some you have to drive to see- mine are 45 minutes one way; then time spent at pharmacy. The new one I'm seeing took 3 months to get into; they then walked me to the lab for blood (some do urine) sample; picked me up & walked me to my next appointment with an osteo. The lab threw my blood away due to the way the script was written verses my name. They were supposed to come on a Monday & never showed; called the next morning & dropped in after lunch. I didn't know that they had an accident with sample #2 until almost 2 weeks later; found out the day of my appointment. I then got a letter in the mail the day of my appointment saying I was discharged due to non-compliance & my appointments were canceled. Took me until 2pm to find out what happened to my blood work; no one would return my call. The place is so big they don't care. I'm now debating if I want to give them another chance & will see what happens with this blood work. The only reason I didn't tell them to shove it is because this place is huge & if anyone can help me; it would be them due to the different doctors they have there.

With pain management; they do random urine &/or blood. You have to sign a pain contract where he will lock his meds up & use 1 pharmacy & if they are out; you have to call the office & let them know where you're going. You also agree you will not take prescriptions for narcotic medications from any Dr- even an oral surgeon. The 2nd time I had oral surgery; I called their office to let them know what I was having done & who was doing it & faxed the script to pain management & filled it but only took 1 pill because it didn't help & had to hand them the rest of the bottle to be destroyed. The next time they gave me a script but I did not fill it & handed it to PM for them to put in my file because the guy I was seeing was very hard to get into & I didn't want anything biting me later on.

The other thing is they do appointments around 28 days which gives you 2 days to fill your script. The new one I'm seeing will also do random pill counts; so there is no taking extra medication if you need one from the day 29-30. They will discharge you for any little thing because they really don't care.

Conclusion- don't change unless you're sure he really needs to.

What you're describing; he should see a neuro surgeon & if they can't help him; they will hand him to pain management. Most do not take patients without a Dr referral & they also want records; some want full records others want at least 6 months to a year.

I have been reading the conversations here and it gave me one opinion on the matter: deb8997 you should see another doctor. Best of luck!

I would reccomend seeing a chronic pain management specialist.
They are often anesthesiologists.

Pain Management New York City, Pain Clinic NYC, Pain Management NY, Back Pain Specialist New York (http://www.nypainsolutions.com/about.html - broken link)
There are other options for pain relief than narcotic drugs, eg some of the drugs for Parkinsons disease and also various devices that interfere with the nerve impulses.

My friend had chronic back pain after an injury whilst working as a RN and had to retire at 34. She used this every morning.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

She also swore by accupuncture.
