Be sure to use only sterile/distilled water as recommended lest you die of brain eating amoeba!!!

Deaths from brain-eating amoeba linked to sinus remedy for colds | Mail Online

Quote:
A sinus-flushing device used to relieve colds and allergies has been linked to a deadly brain-eating amoeba.

Louisiana's state health department issued a warning about neti pots - which look like mini watering cans, that are used by pouring salty water through one nostril. It follows two recent deaths - a 51-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man from the 'brain-eating amoeba' Naegleria fowleri. It is thought the amoeba entered their brains when they used the devices.

Both victims are thought to have used tap water, instead of distilled or sterilised water as recommended by the manufacturers.

Oh dear.
People have been using neti pots forever ... goes way back in India.
Whenever i recommend them i always strongly emphasize the use of purified or distilled water ... not tap water!
Let's not "throw out the baby with the bath water". (that's such a creepy saying)

Anyone who reads the packaging that the neti pot comes in will eliminate their need to worry. Not following the directions is just plain gross and now we know, dangerous.

All is true, however the scare and panic is directly related to the source of the article: The Daily Mail.

That's UK's version of Weekly World News, Star, and the National Enquirer.

Brain-eating amoeba gave birth to monkey-boy, and its father was Elvis. I read it in the Daily Mail, so it must be true.

Man oh man. And to think all those years I was doing "Okie" blows with stream water to flush the trail dust out of my nose when hunting in the back country.

Ok now I know.

Could this amoeba survive the environment inside of a water heater? I always use hot tap water in my netti pot (cooled a bit of course).

There's nothing about a neti pot that's dangerous. What's dangerous, is people who think they don't have to read the directions, when they prepare to pour liquid into their nostrils. Here's a clue: don't snort tainted water. It's bad for you.

That's whether you use a neti pot, or a syringe, or flip backward into a brackish pool of murky water and inhale.

Neti pots are a tried and true method of clearing nasal passages. But if you use tainted water, you'll end up with a tainted body. It's pretty much common sense.

Also, to the poster above this post: hot tap water tends to have even -more- minerals and residue from the pipes than cold water has. Follow the directions, when you introduce liquids into parts of your face that have direct lines to your brain.

My DH just read this story this evening. He is freaking out - not because of the "misuse of neti pots" - his question is "WHY is NO ONE upset that there is a brain-eating amoeba in their tap water??"
