I'm just getting over the symptoms the OP mentions. After 3 weeks of the worst coughing of my life, I finally went in to get a script for cough meds w codeine. Because I was vomiting several times and had chest pains, I had an x-ray. All was normal. It's just an awful cold going around.

Suffice it to say, when someone says they have a stomach flu, they're not using an incorrect term. It is THE #1 most common term for gastroenteritis, with "a stomach virus" being a close second. It's just what it's called. Like a cold, isn't really cold. But that's what a cold is called.
Most people where I live call it a stomach virus, I've only ever heard the term "stomach flu" on TV and here.
