I was a supervisor in a medical insurance precertification office.

Many requests from patients requesting an open MRI came across my desk due to the high number of patients who suffer from claustrophobia.

An open MRI machine is exactly what it implies.

It's designed to accommodate those that are fearful of closed spaces like myself.

Ask your doctor about this option.

The one I was in wasn't so open to me. However that was maybe 6 yrs ago and I am sure the tech has improved. It looked like 2 hamburger buns with me lying in the middle. They had an oscillating floor fan blowing gently on me. I was still uncomfortable but tolerated it for the short time I needed.

That sounds like an Open MRI to me. I recall it looking like two "hamburger buns". Ha-ha!. Have been in both a closed and open MRI. Both feel confining. The open MRI still comes down close to your face, you don't even realize when you are lying there that the sides are "open" so it's scary too!
