Hi Everyone,

I heard that some cheap air conditioners contain chlorine, which is bad for your health. Does anyone know more information about this?

Thanks.

Do you use bleach in your wash? That's Chlorine. There's Chlorine in the water in your pipes too.

Yes, Chlorine Gas is dangerous, but I doubt if it is in an A/C in any way that could harm you. In fact, I can't think of a way that it could be used. I don't think it could be used to replace the refrigerant.

You would have to breathe in a lot of the pure Chlorine Gas. Ask a reputable A/C dealer about it. Get him to explain if he thinks there is a danger.

I wouldn't worry too much about things that you "hear". Chlorine has a very conspicuous smell, and if there is any around, you'll smell it. It is the bleach smell that you can detect on someone who has just come out of a swimming pool. Enough Chlorine to smell could be given off by some bacteria that might be forming in the coils of an older AC system, but if you can't smell any chlorine, there isn't enough in your air to worry about.
