You notice a mysterious rash on your forearm. With no idea as to what might be causing it — not bedbugs! — you take to the Web. Not to check WebMD for a quickie self-diagnosis but to Skype with your dermatologist and show him the affected patch of skin.

This concept has gained a lot of momentum in recent years. It’s ideal for people in rural areas who would otherwise need to drive long distances to see a certain specialist, and rural hospitals that do not have certain specialists on staff (Cartersville Medical Center in Georgia used this technology for Neurology consults for several months before they were able to recruit a Neurologist onto their staff.) The idea of online counseling has really taken off recently. It has its uses, but as the article points out, there are many cases where medicine via. teleconference should not be used.
