I work for a large healthcare company. I take 2 medications brand name. I do so because they work. the generics will not work. My doctor has written the required request, the failing of two generics etc.

Here is the cost 90 Day supply.
$343.00 my cost
$ 50.00 insurance pays

I have argued with the company and they will not budge. It is a black spot on an otherwise good relationship.

So my question is has anyone tried any other sources Canada Mexico for brand name medications with a valid prescription? Are they the same drugs and are they safe? I have also written to Glaxo asking for financial assistance to see if they stand behind their drugs.

Thanks in Advance.

Many drug companies offer free or reduced prescription programs. My husband goes through his doctor to get free Symbicort directly from the maker. I happened upon an application on their website one day; maybe you can find the same thing for your drugs. However, since you are working your income may be too high to qualify.

Have your doctor write a letter to your state insurance commissioner stating that the company is refusing to cover a medication prescribed for a legitimate indication for which other medications have been tried and failed to work.

Your insurance company should cover the medication for the same copay it requires for other brand name medications.

Here in GA, behavior like that gets insurance companies in hot water. But California is ... California.

It never hurts to report them.

Just for sport I may. They actually suggested that unless you have had an adverse reaction and reported it to the FDA watchlist you can't get the brand covered at the generic rate. That may be worth the investigation on it's own. I have suggested to them that the inception of the watchlist has nothing to do with payment/reimbursement and they should have a conscience. The dark side....

I use a Canadian pharmacy for two prescriptions. They're much cheaper there -- one script would cost me $300/month in the USA even with insurance but costs only $40/month in Canada. And they work just as well as what I'd get in the USA.

My sister went to Mexico and bought a gazillion boxes of both prescriptions for me. She was able to buy them over-the-counter there dirt-cheap. The script that costs $300/month in the USA and $40/month in Canada -- she got for $8/month in Mexico. I was somewhat afraid to use it but I asked my doctor (who is very knowledgeable about drugs) and he said most Mexican drugs are ok. So I tried them and what do you know -- they worked fine too (according to my blood test results).

But, unless she goes to Mexico again, I'll be back to ordering my next refills from Canada.

I had a similar problem years ago, my insurance company wanted me to try other drugs I KNEW didn't work before they would pay from one that did, I ended up getting "samples" from my doctor.

I guess they wanted to waste hundreds of dollars before paying about one hundred.

I talked with a couple pharmacists. They told me they order from Canada but not Mexico. 1/3 cost same pink pill.

Something is wrong with this picture.
