3divina...him trying to find a facility that he approves of is his first sign that he's really NOT serious about quitting...or..... he doesn't feel that he really has a problem that he needs help with.....you are correct when you say that "if he doesn't, nothing will work"....

Someone was talking about how when they were in grad school, they had to attend several substance abuse workshops, and the professors told them that AA doesn't work for every alcoholic, and that there are different types of alcoholics, only 40% of whom are in the general alcoholic category. The twelve step program is best suited to general alcoholics, those who have a substance abuse disorder only. In addition, there are personality types who will never believe that they are powerless over anything, and if they can't admit or believe this, they can't work the rest of the steps. Other programs would be better suited for them.

Question to 3Divina: How old is the person in question? In a way it sounds like you are talking about a teenager, given the strong role being played by the parents.

Is he still drinking while he is "deciding" on an appropriate treatmant program? If he is that sounds like just a way to stall what he needs to do.

Well he goes on binges...so when he's between binges you can't tell if he has quit drinking or if it's just the time between binges.

So he is simply stalling that is all. A drinker will run there own mother over for a drink. They will say ANYTHING AT ALL to keep drinking. Right now this is nothing to keep drinking. This is nothing right now nothing at all.

True story: My mother drank. A lot. Three fifths of bourbon a week. And she frequently fell and didn't remember what happened. After a time, she picked up the phone and called the number of a Help Line which referred her to an AA sponsor. When the man answered the phone, she said to him, "I'm calling because I think I may be an alcoholic." The man responded with, "Well when you're sure, call me back." and he hung up. In other words, don't waste my time. A person is serious when they
decide they need help, not when someone else decides.
