This will sound odd but I occasionally smell things that aren't around, usually coffee (I don't drink coffee!), sometimes bacon, sometimes something "Hot" like electrical or something, sometimes other things - nothing really horrible but I find it odd.
Found this: Gustatory aura symptoms Migraine sufferers can experience illusions or hallucinations of taste as gustatory aura symptoms. The differential diagnosis of these symptoms includes temporal lobe epilepsy, now more commonly called complex partial seizure disorder, so that a neurological examination is warranted in each case presenting with such gustatory symptoms
I don't get migraines though (did have an issue w/cluster headaches MANY yrs. ago) - had a headache the other day for the first time in I can't remember when and I believe it was due to sinus. Thanks for looking it up though. I also Googled and found one person had asked that person about Fibromyalgia (which I have), first I had heard of it related to Fibro. I wonder if I should check w/ a Neuro. just for the heck of it (I did once yrs. ago because I have some numbness in my back). I'm someone that doesn't go to Drs. unless direly needed.

If those olfactory hallucinations (which is what they are) aren't followed by any other symptoms, and are simply "odd smells that show up randomly and go away soon after", then there's nothing to worry about. Most people get them, but not everyone is sensitive enough about their own sense of smell to notice.
While I brush my teeth right now (okay I put the brush down to type but my mouth is full of toothpaste), I am smelling bacon. Or maybe not bacon, maybe it's just smoked ham, or smoked wood. Just some general, vague smokey smell that my brain has interpreted to mean "bacon."
It's gone now. Just popped in and out, and probably did that just because I was thinking about the subject matter of this post. I rarely pay attention to these, unless they indicate danger (like the smell of actual smoke or something burning, or rotted meat, not just a "smokey" smell).
You should tell your doctor about this....it could be something serious. A neurologist is who they will probably send you to....make an appointment soon!
Thanks for you opinions - I just wanted to toss it out there and see if anyone else has similar "phantom smells" - it doesn't worry me TOO much - I still don't have a regular doc. - when I get around to it, I'll have to mention that.
If it is something that just happens now and then I wouldn't worry about it, I have had that happen, but if this is something that occurs a lot then you should talk to a doctor about it.
OP I have the same sensitivity. I can smell things that are real up to a mile away. After I had my 3rd sinus surgery for blockage my sensitivity to smells went through the roof. Doc said that was normal and not to worry, which I don't. But it drives my wife crazy when I ask her "do you smell that" and she can't.
