I have it: burning sensation on front thigh skin, numbness on skin on lower legs, 5 years after spinal fusion surgery and 2 years after varicose vein surgery. Had the MRI, nerve conductivity tests - nothing. The doctor thinks one of 2 things: either the metal in my back following surgery is causing it, or the fact I am 15 lbs heavier now, could be an issue. So.... I am loosing the weight. Yes it's a nerve thing but seems from these posts, no one can really pin it down.
just a comment: if you are having calf/knee/thigh pain when laying down or remaining in one position for a long time, and if back problems have been ruled out, I would suggest you look into restless leg syndrome. I had pain like the OP's, and had meniscal scraping, chiropractic, changed from a stick shift car to automatic, special exercises, etc and nothing helped. thought I was just having leg cramps. 6 years later, diagnosed with sleep disorder and restless leg was noted in the sleep study. I saw a neurologist and now take a small dose generic mirapex at night, plus magnesium tablets, and the problem has gone away.
It sounds like Meralgia Paresthetica, which is compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. I have had it for seven years or so - I believe I got it after having a hysterectomy, which can cause it, among other things. My thigh has been numb (in the same areas as yours) all that time, with recurring bouts of burning pain, and sometimes itchiness that drives me mad as scratching the numb skin doesn't help as I can't feel anything, yet it itches - grrrrrr. I took some drugs to help with the pain, but they didn't help - now I just live with it.
I saw my regular MD and a pain specialist about it, neither had heard of it! I suppose I should look into seeing some other doctor for it, but I have too many other medical issues that take precedence. Sorry, I don't know what type of doctor you should see for it.
This is EXACTLY what I have only on my right thigh just to the right of my knee. it is about a 6 inch by 4 inch section that is numb, hurts to touch, and itches to the point of insanity!!! I have had this for over 4 years now and I just deal with it because I don't know what it is!! It hasn't moved or gotten bigger, but it just drives me crazy sometimes!!
I have the same thing and have had it for a year it's Meralgia paraesthetica I have to start physical therapy and if that doesn't work I might have to have surgery.
This forum has helped me immensely--you are describing my symptoms so much! I am a 52 y/o female, currently experiencing pain that wraps around my left hip, occasional shooting pain/tingling and numbness in the left thigh and burning on the inside of my left knee, I limp with minimal activity and severe pain with exercise. I had a complete hysterectomy/exploratory bowel surgery (endrometrial tissue had wrapped around my intestines) in 1999; an incisional hernia repair in 2007 (on the hysterectomy incision) and for the last 3 years I've suffered with this hip pain. The pain got considerably worse this year, and in May 2015 I went to the ER and was diagnosed with diverticultis. I've never thought this was the cause of the pain, but that's what showed. After 3 rounds of antibiotics and a failed colonoscopy procedure (which they only got in about 6 inches), I was taken in for a bowel resection, removing 12 inches of my colon, but no colostomy (thank goodness). The wrap around hip pain came back after the surgery. Chiropractic work, especially the "drop" table, exacerbated the pain considerably. And since that surgery, I limp severely after walking 1/4 of a mile. My activity level has dropped considerably, however, I keep trying to stay active with jazzercise and walking. And then just suffer through the pain afterwards. I wait a few days or weeks, giving my body a chance to rest, then try activity again. In Sept 2015, I finally went back to the surgeon and they ruled out additional hernias. I finally went to my regular physician and I just had an MRI this week. They also are doing extensive bloodwork looking at inflamation markers. He is suspecting sciatica, but I haven't fallen on my butt/back or injured my back in years. I have weakness in left leg. So here's my question... Would the nerve damage from the hysterectomy make my symptoms different for sciatica? I'll post again after I go to the doctor tomorrow, November 6, 2015. Thank you!
I have had a numbness that began about 3 weeks ago. It is located from my left knee extending up the front of the thigh about 10 inches. There is also a burning associated with this at times when Stretching before a run. Also at times a sensation as if water is dripping down the leg. I have been a runner for a long time and just not sure this was the cause. My doctor suggested it was likely a nerve issue and may go away on it's own.
For you it sounds like IT band damage. I ended up with this IT band damage during hip replacement in 2010 and still deal with it almost 6 yrs later. Femoral Cutaneous Nerve was also damaged during the surgery and hence my thigh is 80% numb and I've taken supps to get rid of burning but I still get the "burn" at times. My surgery left me with a mess. I must have been running on that operating table. Or the surgeon was running to get out of the OR.
Active Release Technique (ART) work does help that IT band damage and I had it but I still have the mess.

Your doctor is likely correct. No harm in seeing if it resolves meralgia paresthetica could give you numbness in the distribution you describe
One thing it most certainly isn't is IT band. IT band syndrome does not give any of the symptoms you describe

From what I've read on this IT band damage, many runners end up with this.
