I chose stroke, because I read an article in the Los Angeles Times a long time ago about a stroke victim. She was only 30 years old when it happened, and she was imprisoned in her own body, completely unable to communicate until many years later when a nurse or aide discovered that she was cognizant and aware. That scares me more than anything, far more than dying, in fact!

The second choice is schizophrenia or Alzheimer's. Anything that steals a person's mind and/or entire personality is extremely frightening.

I found a reprint of the article. It's just as horrific now as it was when I first read it in 1995.

Los Angeles Times

December 17, 1995, Sunday, Home Edition

SECTION: Magazine; Page 20; Magazine Desk

LENGTH: 11827 words

HEADLINE: JULIA UNDERSTANDS EVERYTHING;

29 YEARS AGO, JULIA TAVALARO HAD A STROKE THAT LEFT HER DEAD TO THE OUTSIDE

WORLD. BUT INSIDE, LIFE WAS BURNING MORE FIERCELY THAN PEOPLE IMAGINED. THIS

IS THE STORY OF THAT LIFE AND HER REMARKABLE JOURNEY.

BYLINE: By Richard E. Meyer, Richard E. Meyer is a national correspondent

for The Times.

I can't post the whole thing due to copyright issues, of course, but it's worth reading if you find it.

I said cancer. I myself was diagnosed with Melanoma skin cancer back in 2008 and have to get checked every year for it now. And I've lost 4 relatives from cancer in the last 15 years.

I picked "other" though my fear could easily fall under "cancer." My biggest fear is some disease that would necessitate my wearing a colostomy bag or being otherwise incontinent (like a spinal cord injury and becoming paralyzed). Having to have to have others attend to my "toileting" would be the WORST.
To me, physical pain and the loss of general health are not as bad as the loss of dignity.

I chose cancer simply because of the pain and forms of treatment. The thought of killing all the cells in my body in the hope that the bad cells will not grow back just frightens me.

Right up there with "anything involving incontinence" for me, would be anything that makes it hard to breathe. I get a feeling of panic to just imagine not being able to get a full breath. When I hear people struggling to breathe, I have to go away. I recently watched a documentary of a young woman dying of cystic fibrosis, and just hearing her struggle to get a breath made me start crying. I've never been a smoker, so I guess my chances of lung disease are low, but I did spend most of my early life in New Jersey, so you never know....

The thought of developing any kind of dementia is absolutely horrifying. I would rather die in agony with full body cancer than to slowly feel my mind slipping away.
