My friend needs a hip replacement and has insurance but they won't pay for the whole thing. They want $25,000 upfront and then $45,000 balance plus whatever insurance does cover. She's self employed but with the economy she's broke. She can barely walk because of her hip and will probably soon be in a wheelchair because she can't get the surgery. She can't get disability or medicaid. I'm trying to research the internet to see if there's any help out there. Any suggestions?

I found this - even though it was last year, perhaps they can point you in the right direction: Operation Walk 2011 | Knee Surgery, Hip Surgery and Joint Surgery

Thank you so much. There are some links on the bottom that might help.

You're welcome.

I should have clicked on the links to find the actual site for Operation Walk. Here is the official site for others seeking help - they provide free hip replacements for those who can't afford it: Operation Walk I didn't look to see what the requirements are.

C2ShiningC's reference may be your friend's best bet. She could also try talking with other orthopedic surgeons. If she's lucky, some may be willing to do the surgery for little to no cost (beyond what the insurance will pay.) Hospital costs may be another matter altogether, though. This may be a long shot, I would try Operation Walk first.

In cases like this, I would seriously think about medical tourism. You could travel and pay for a whole trip abroad AND have your hip replaced by some of the best surgeons and hospitals in the world for probably a fraction of that.
