I've had the water pic thing done at the doctor when I was a kid and peroxide done by a nurse when I was in college. Both times it hurt like crazy. I don't think it usually does. The nurse even said, "Oh, it doesn't hurt" after I complained. It does for me for some reason! I really think they could benefit from getting cleaned out again but I'm afraid to try.

My doc told me to never put peroxide in my ears but said that a 50/50 solution of vinegar and rubbing alcohol is the only wash you should use. It does work and it helps with the itching. Another thing about itching though is that if you don't have enough ear wax it can itch--you need a certain amount to be there and that's what it's for--doc told me that there is such a thing as not having enough--it's just not good when it clumps up or gets really dried out and then it clogs your ears.

My husband goes to a ear specialist every six months and has his ears cleaned out. The doctor said his earwax was real gummy and that is why his ears get all clogged and stopped up. His doc uses a little tube like vacuum thing that sucks the wax out.

In the past he tried other things ... the kit you buy with the oil that you drop in the ears for 2-3 days and the little blue syringe is included. The oil is suppose to soften the wax and then you use the syringe with warm water to wash out the earwax. I busted his ear drum using that syringe and we ended up in the ER. So no more ear cleaning for me ... that is when he ended up at the specialist.

My ears accumulate lots of wax and they used to get really sore all the time. The doctor had to do the peroxide treatment twice once there was so much accumulated. They also have bumpy ear canals so it doesn't run out. I have switced to using peroxide at home and rincing after when it starts to itch. No near infections. No ringing in the ear.

As I hold water in my ears I always used it after putting them in a pool and then reliablly ending up with an infection.

thanks for all these posts/ input.

I did the peroxide last nite and man my ears felt like they went to the EAR SPA ... but i really like to get my doc to give me a professional draining/cleaning and i want to see what comes out. I know you maybe wondering why I am just curious to see what is removed.

When hubby would try to do the home cleaning with the kit (before I screwed up his ear drum) it was lots of big hunks and chunks of earwax. I could understand his habit of answering 'huh' all the time. Our son's ears are starting to have the same problem.

I've used peroxide in my ears on the recommendation of doctor friends when my ears felt clogged and swollen, probably from irritation caused by using q-tips. I don't think it really did anything but felt kind of cool and my ear healed within a week.

Recently I was feeling a different sort of clogged feeling, like I had something in my ear rather than just swelling. My sister is a physician and has some ear cleaning tools so she cleaned them out. No wonder I felt clogged, she pulled out a nasty piece of dark wax a bit smaller than an M&M! Again, probably the result of my using q-tips that pushed the wax further in instead of cleaning it out.

In short, q-tips should probably be avoided.

I won't claim that it's "safe" as you are literally playing with fire. I'm not sure that I would call it a gimick though. I did see the wax with my own eyes (fortunately no bugs), and I know a room full of people who witnesses it being done and saw the ear wax in the candle too. These are people that just wouldn't make this stuff up.

But, I understand scepticism, and I would never push someone to try something they aren't comfortable with.

Signed up so I could respond to this post. I had problems with impacted ear wax once. Woke up one day and was completely deaf yet could feels a big chunk of ear wax with my pinkie. Good thing the dad is a nurse and had a ear wax curette to get it out. This is what he got:

That's 1/2" screw next to it btw. Amazing what getting that out did for my hearing. It felt better than sex!

Several years ago, both of my ears became so wax-clogged that I was almost deaf. My doctor attempted the ear wash with warm water and a syringe several times to no avail. I was then referred to an ENT who suctioned out the wax. He told me at the time that I have very tiny ear canals.

Just this last winter, I had the same problem in my right ear (which seems to get waxier than the left). My internist told me that her ENT had told her to use peroxide in her son's ears. She told me to try that first. I did. It fizzed and tickled, but it didn't help. Finally went to an ENT. Even he had a hard time getting it out with this suction and tiny scraping tools. There was a large wad of wax practically covering my ear drum. He suggested that every so often I put a couple drops of mineral oil in my ear to soften the wax.

Re the use of Q-Tips, they are okay for cleaning the outer part of the ear, but you can't stick them into your ear canal, or you will just tamp down the wax more and more until it starts cutting off your hearing. Before you go for a hearing test, try getting yours ears cleaned out by an ENT!
