Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I know most of you had this done already.

I was scheduled to have a 6 month mammogram next week because of the needle biopsy I had done last year. Now keep in mind the results were benign. Normally mammograms are free under my insurance plan, but when the center called they said my copay was $300. They said I was having a "diagnostic mammogram" instead of a "routine mammogram" because of the needle biopsy which makes the price increase. The breast dr won't do a prescription for a routine mammogram. Is this normal for all doctors to do, or is it possible to do routine? According to them I will have to do diagnostic from here on out because of the biopsy. I canceled the appointment for now until I have the money for it. They did find another place that charges $120, but I still need to pay the specialist $60 too then. Too strapped for cash right now so will have to do it in a few months as I have another specialist to go to in 2 weeks.

Thanks for any replies!

If it is only the standard two views of each breast and you have no abnormality to be "diagnosed", it is for screening, and your doctor should be able to make that argument. However, the language in your insurance plan may rule. If it says you get one free every year, that is all it will pay for. You also don't dare schedule them 364 days apart, either. Make sure it is a full year and a few days to be safe. So though yours is not "diagnostic", you may have to pay copay and any deductible, just like you would any other X-ray.
