This happened to me at a VA hospital and it still haunts me.I feel this needs to be talked about and any one being put under needs to be told this could happen.Usually a breathing tube is removed before or just as a patient is waking up after an operation but if you google it you will see that it does happen and it scared the crap out of me and I fear having dreams about it,it has taken months for me to talk about this.My advise is to tell all doctors associated with your procedure that you Don't Want To Wake Up This Way!! before they put you under.

It is unfortunate, but sometimes necessary.

Patients can be warned about it in advance but you still won't be prepared for it if it happens.

There are times when it is unavoidable and patient safety is at stake that intubation has to be extended beyond the end of surgery.

Hope you are doing better.

Absolutely true. Saves lives, sometimes.

This happened to me and brought back renewed trauma from sexual assault. it has been decades and I still have nightmares. Whenever I have surgery I always mention this to doctors and nurses in the room and beg them to please not tie me down. If I explain it calmly before surgery starts I have had nurse stay with me to make sure I don't thrash. My husband has also been able to be with me while I am coming out from under to make sure they don't tie me down. The breathing tube I understand but god the tying down is a nightmare.

Thank You for understanding, unless this has happened to you one can not easily understand the fright and shock of it.
