My 3 year old son was bit by our dog a week ago. He was bit on his right cheek. He did not require any stitches but there were several bite marks and the entire scar area is round and about 1-2 inches in diameter. We are through with the round of oral antibiotics and the scar is looking better. What is best to use to help the scar appearance and fading? Right now Iv'e been putting cocoa butter and vitamin E oil on the area twice a day.
When my son was 3 a metal swing hit him below his eye...no stitches but he did have a noticeable scar for years...good news he is now 30 and it is a tiny mark that doesn't hurt his looks a bit!
I think silicone sheets are most effective for minimizing scars. Scar Away and Scar Ease are 2 brand names, typically found in band aid aisle of stores.
Safe, easy to use, not messy and seems to be most effective based on the studies that have been done.
What everyone else said plus you have to keep it out of the sun. I'd use zinc to just completely block the rays - plus you can see when it has worn off. Some manufacturers make it in different colors. A three year old might enjoy that.
Keep the wound moist (covered in petroleum jelly/vaseline) and covered/bandaged until completely healed. Do not allow a scab to form. What you do now will have far more effect than what you try after it's healed.
