While I am no big fan of "Dr." Mercola, I do agree with the article. Even my own doctor told me that most of our cholesterol in our bodies comes from our own liver. By the way, I eat a ton of full-fat foods (no low-fat ANYTHING) including butter, cheese, coconut and olive oils and nuts. My cholesterol has IMPROVED eating this way and my doctor commended me on it.
There are quite a few doctors out there that agree with the info in the posted article.
Actually, there is good info mixed with the typical Mercola spin and the inevitable link to mercola.com.
Mercola glosses over anti-inflammatory effect of statins. After all, he is anti-statin all the way. The fact is that "natural" methods of reducing inflammation do not work very well.
Cholesterol is not the sole factor in the genesis of atheroscleosis, but it is a big player. If cholesterol is deposited in arteries as a response to inflammation --- as part of an attempted repair process --- the bad news is that the resulting plaque can eventually rupture, attracting platelets to deal with the defect, and result in occlusion of the artery.
So follow the diet guidelines, exercise, and consider a statin --- discuss benefits and risks --- if your doctor suggests it.
Despite Mercola's bias, the fact is that mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases in the US are declining. It appears that doctors are doing something right.
As to Mercola; I caught him in a big error in a post he made on one of the boards I was frequenting. He never did respond to my reply exposing him.
As to the cholesterol.....Yes your body makes most of it. The problem comes from a sluggish digestive system (not enough fiber), therefore leading to a re-uptake and a high reading on the tests.
