What is the standard of living of individuals affected by autism, first-hand, in other countries, compared to America? I think the standard of living in general is lower than average for these individuals. I wanted to know if any studies have been done.
I have a friend who works as a social worker of sorts in connexion with persons with autism in the U.K. These are adults who live in collective residences, four per residence, I believe. (These are in the local community, if I recall right.) They have job and they contribute a share of their wages to food, etc. Her function is to keep tabs on them, help them with finances and living problems, and to go with them on trips to fairs, films, etc.
She said that this is a not uncommon arrangement for autistic adults with adequate social skills.
