Did you ever smoke Kent cigarettes? Those filters were made of asbestos.
I just learned that the "surprisingly effective" filters in Kent cigarettes, the ones that supposedly made smoking cigarettes safer, were made of 100% asbestos.
Really.
With the focus on profitable cancer treatements rather than prevention, it is clear that the vested interests are still doing their besst to cover up the sources of the epidemic of cancers in America today. Found several interesting tidbits in this NY Times book report. (Wish I could quote those excerpts from the review here.)

Asbestos is not the only thing to worry about with smoking. BUT- I still believe that anyone who smokes is NOT entitled to compensation from the tobacco companies.
That is where this is going; I can tell.

The tobacco companies knew for many yrs that cigs were bad but looked at the bottom line instead of the people using their products.

I don't believe you should be compensated for getting sick from what you knew about...but no one knew they were also being exposed to asbestos. That is horrendous and they should pay out the nose for allowing people to be exposed to it.

Ever since the 1960'a, cigarettes have had warnings on the packages. I understand that smoking is stupid, but I would think that not all of the people smoking are so stupid as to not understand plain and simple warnings. That however, may be debateable.
When one sees a railroad crossiong, does one purposely stand on the tracks, then blame the rail company for hitting them? I realize that, in todays' litigious society, one tries to do that, but the fact is that they should never even be permitted to file such a stupidity suit.
Same is true with smoking, and the subsequent lawsuits. Anyone who smokes today is an idiot, pure and simple. They, from years of researrch and warnings, know the implications. Once they pay for that pack of cigarettes, and light them up, they assume the responsibility for the conditions ensued by the habit.
Why should the courts be listening to cass of people too dumb to quit, even with a warning posted on the very prroduct they are using? Why should the manufacturers be paying the people for being stupid?
If I am ever called to such a jury trial, the person would leave with nothing.
