Yes, it appears they do but the comment about maybe he/she will drink themselves to death soon, worries me. I can't imagine saying something like that about a friend of relative. If Op would come back and explain what they mean and why it might help. I am guessing the drinker does have a problem.

You can't imagine it because you have never been in this situation and trust me that is a very good thing.

You know nothing about me: how do you know I have never been in that situation? I will add, right now: I have, my mom died of liver disease, so, yes I have and yes, it is awful, but I never hoped for her to drink herself to death. And it is Mothers Day, I think about her often on days like today. Our foster daughter also watched her mother die of alcohol and she too, lives though the HELL every year...

Part of the answer to the OP's question is how fast the 600 ml of vodka was consumed and if it was consumed on an empty stomach. Over the course of an evening, i.e., several hours, is a whole lot different than over the course of 30 minutes. What matters in causing death is the concentration of alcohol in the blood, as already mentioned.

By the way, why would anyone want to consume a pint of vodka in one evening? What would be the point? Just to keep drinking for the sake of drinking? I don't get it.
Define one evening? You start drinking at 5 or 6 and keep drinking slowly until 2 am or so, its very easy to consume way more then a pint.

You are a better person than I.

It would take me a month to drink a pint of vodka. OP that is worrisome. I think your friend has a drinking problem.
