Hello everyone,

I've had a stuffy nose since I was 13, and it has never gotten any better. My nose is stuffy all the time, full of mucus. It makes me self-conscious because I'm always sniffling and blowing my nose.

Here's what I've tried: nasal sprays, antihistamines, allergy shots, air purifiers, and nasal irrigation. Nothing has worked. I went to an ENT and he looked up my nose and didn't find anything like polyps and simply recommended that I do nasal irrigation which I did for several weeks but after nothing changed I stopped.

Any other things I should try? Can I get surgery to fix this? This makes it difficult to breathe when I sleep and when I work out but I'm not dying from it so would I still be able to get my insurer to pay for this?

It absolutely can fix that. My friend had suffered the same problem her whole life, and she had a balloon sinoplasty, by a board certified specialist. She is cured of the misery. It was covered by insurance.

Surgery will not necessarily work. I've had 3 of them, turbinate reduction, septoplasty and the balloon trick to enlarge the passages to no avail. . Finally a doctor (#8) found out that I had allergies to certain foods as well as some vegetation. Most allergists only test for flora allergens. You more than likely have a deviated septum (most people do) and that is causing some blockage plus allergic reactions to something. You can try enlarging the nasal passages with various types of surgeries as your doctor may recommend, but in the long run you need to find the real cause of the problem and work around that. I found that a glutten free diet works wonders for me. Wheat and dairy products are my downfall.

Yep, gluten and dairy are often the culprits in food allergies which can cause excess mucus production.

Have you tried eliminating those foods containing gluten and dairy from your diet?

No I have not. I eat gluten and dairy every day, but I could try abstaining for two weeks and seeing what happens.

Well, gosh., it would be absolutely brilliant if your chronic stuffy nose is being caused by gluten and/or dairy. I read once that we often eat/crave the very foods we're allergic to. why, I don't know, but that's the case.

Will it be hard for you to give up all dairy (especially milk/ice cream/cheeses--so no pizza!) and gluten because it's in so many things?

But it's sure worth a shot if you're "fed-up" with having to blow your nose all the time.

Please report back at the end of the two week period and let us know if there's a difference....
