Anyone else have a psychological dependence on simply having valium available? I can go a month or more and not take one - my last bottle of 30 5 mg pills lasted 7ish months so I took at most one a week on average. But now that the last half pill is gone, I feel panicky. This happened the last time I ran out too. For some reason the doctor gave me a really generous supply and I had something like 170 10 mg pills. They lasted a good 5 yrs other than the 20 or so I left in the car accidentally all summer and tossed (I researched and found they don't really degrade once expired but was pretty sure extreme heat would not be good for them). But when I ran out....ugh.

prescribing 170 10mg valium pills sounds like particularly bad practice, and is asking for trouble...although you have managed this well, for many more vulnerable people, things might not have turned out so well.

do you receive any kind of psychological therapy? personally, i would be far more keen of finding cognitive & behavioural methods to deal with anxiety, than be reliant on (or the availability of) a tablet.

Lay in a supply of GABA, an amino acid that is also a neurotransmitter and calms you. When my mother died my brother was a mess and I gave him some and he sailed thru the day and no longer laughs at my altmed suggestions and he even set foot in the health food store to get some. Before that he was a valium man. If you're having extreme anxiety you can open one up and put the powder under your tongue to get in your system quicker.

OP, I think what you have is a pretty normal reaction. Like not having any tampax in the house, when you get your period !!! The feeling that you are out of your helpful and needed med, and then you have to call a doc, get a script, go to the pharmacy, etc etc can be anxiety producing. To alleviate this temporary fear, just be sure you have on hand what you need. If its one a week, no concern. If it gets to be a lot more frequent, then see someone for your anxiety. Short term anxiety in this world of problems is pretty normal. I say if it helps you get past these times, just do it. JMHO

kronenborg, I was shocked that he gave me so many. He gave me iirc 42 10 mg and 3 refills. I was pretty sure there was a mistake somewhere but have to admit I was not about to look a gift horse in the mouth, knowing how I treat valium when I have it. I do need therapy for PTSD (simultaneously went through my rental being foreclosed on, my kids arriving at 25 weeks with all the attendant struggles and complications, then lost my job when I could not return to work when my STD was over...am proud of making it through but still get stressed very easily. Was just a basketcase over the prospect of a tornado here.)

stepka, I do have some GABA powder I was intending to play with in face cream but need to figure out how much to put in - my first experiement was a failure. I wonder if I could just mix it in pudding or applesauce and try it that way?

PhxBarb, I would say sometimes I take one a day for a few days....then I might go a month or more not taking one...half a one then nothing for a week or two. I know I need a better way to cope but they've been a comfort when I needed one.

So, I had to take my newish dog into the vet for among other things his thunderstorm phobia. I now have a prescription for 14 lovely Xanax. Am hoping their presence will have the same effect on me as my own prescription would though the one time I tried Xanax, I did not care for how I felt on them but if I were desperate, I guess I could try one again. I find myself doing the same for Harry as myself - giving just half a pill to make them last longer. And it seems like plenty - he just settled down in his crate and is perfectly quiet about 30 min after I gave it to him.
