The above is a baseless conclusion. Cracking down on the drug mill doctors (an extremely small if very troubling percentage of total doctors) will not affect the prescribing of pain medications for legitimate uses.
Prescription mills are one thing. Legitimate prescriptions for legitimate pain are another.
The problem is the rotten apples are tainting the oranges as highly publicized cases of Florida pain pill mills work their way through the media, which then alerts the FDA to start warning Dr's about their prescribing habits, which then cause Dr's legitimately prescribing pain meds to people in legitimate pain to pull back, telling their patients they are afraid of losing their license if they continue prescribing pain meds to them, which then puts legitimate pain patients in the bind of having to be forever seeking a Dr who is willing to prescribe the pain meds necessary to keep them able to function in their everyday life and on the job.
You cannot deny that the first (abuse of narcotics) directly and negatively affects the second (patients who legitimately need narcotic meds).

Making people who are ill and in pain go to see their doctor once a month isn't the answer.
Not everyone can hop in a nice, comfortable car to get to the doctor's office. Some may have to painfully walk quite a way to get to a bus stop.....then sit and wait on a hard bench for the bus....perhaps transfer from one bus to another.....then.....once they finally get to the doctor's office.....they may have to sit there in an uncomfortable chair for an hour or more waiting to see the doctor.........THEN.....make the horrible trip back home......all the while IN PAIN.....being forced to do things that cause the pain to be worse.
All so the doctor can spend two minutes with them, asking them if they are still in pain {when the doctor knows damn well they are} just to satisfy a bureaucratic technicality.
People who are unlucky enough to have a chronic pain condition, especially the elderly, shouldn't be submitted to what amounts to unnecessary torture because of the criminal behavior of others.
Torturing the innocent for the benefit of the guilty is not the answer.

It is happening and it's just not the elderly.....whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.
I personally know a girl who has Crohn's disease so bad that she had to have part of her bowel removed......she is forced to go to the doctor every month to obtain her pain meds......she has a minimum wage job and having to pay $36 a month just to jump through a hoop is quite a burden for her.
And let's not forget the gas it costs her to drive one half hour each way to make that doctor's visit.
She is being punished because of what other people do.
It is an unnecessary burden put on innocent people who can least afford it, both physically and financially.
My husband and I are thinking about moving to FL BUT he has been on pain meds for 8 years and I am so scared he won't be able to find a legit pain Doctor down there. They are shutting them down left and right and I mean the pill mills. We don't want that we want a reputable pain center. We are thinking about the Citrus county area. Any info on how to go about getting a good center ? Thanks
Well, my husband has decided to stop his pain meds, can he do this on his own or does he have to check n to a treatment center or can his PCP help him get off of them ? How have you all done this. Please help me with some answers.. Thank you
To the OP: Don't worry. Doctors, pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, and hospitals are making far too much money off of all the pill addicts to even think about curtailing the flow.

The others have a point too. When I was an RN many of the nurses had a puritanical attitude about pain med orders.
The order would be written PRN (Pro Re Nata - as needed by the patient.)
If a patient asked for a pain med, I'd comply, as long as it was withing the window of time permitted.
Additionally, waiting just allows the blood level of medication to drop further. I saw no percentage in asking a patient who stated that they were experiencing pain to suck it up.
Since I last worked, there has been an increasing movement against any kind of pain medication and a concurrent and unfortunate increase in pain medication abuse.
While on some level, I do fear this, I tend to agree with imcurious. Greed will trump the pain med police.
"Pain Clinics" are just legal ways to dispense pain pills (mostly) to people who enjoy their effects.
Americans just love to use euphemisms.

Florida has jailed people for taking PRESCRIBED pain medication! That's the last state I'd think of If he needs pain medication.

Definitely. It was Florida's pain med mills and an ABC hour-long special report by Leslie Stahl that focused attention on all these dealers from Ohio and Tennessee running down to Florida every month that blew the lid open on the abuse and caused some sweeping reforms in the Florida legislature.
Not saying the changes weren't good--there needed to be some reform to stop the abuse. But now it's boomeranged, as it so often does, and innocent people with legitimate concerns are getting caught in the cross-hairs.
