I had a very similar problem when we moved from Colorado, where I was fine, to Illinois where I suffered with unbearable allergies, was unable to sleep or breathe, constantly was clogged or dripping, sounded like I had a horrid cold and was exhausted all the time. At first I thought the air conditioning was to blame. It seemed to be worse in the cold room air. But then I went to an allergist, got tested and started injections, for four years. Gradually I got better. Then a few years later the same thing started and I had another 3 years of shots. No problems after that.

Until I have health insurance seeing a specialist is out of the question. I know, and so does she, that an ENT and an allergist are where we should be.

My wife suspects allergies. I think she is probably right. I have also thought that it could we an auto immune syndrome.

Does anyone know if this could be connected to Fibromyalgia? She was diagnosed with that a few years ago. The FM is nothing compared to this.

Thanks to those who offered suggestions and links.

I wish more than anything that she could see the two physicians that she has already lined up.
Obviously, I didn't think that anyone here could cure her, but sometimes if someone has had a similar problem or knows of a home remedy that helps, it is useful to get the opinions of others.

She did go to the ER the other night when it became really bad and she felt as though her throat was closing up. What happened was horrible. (see Rude Dr thread)

What has she been doing for her allergies and symptoms?

Zyrtec is available over the counter. Decongestants (Sudefed, the good stuf behind the counter) can help with drainage. There's also a saline called Ocean that you can put in your nose to clear sinuses. My son uses a steam shower. Increase drinking water helps loosen it all up so it drains. That's what I have to do since I'm hypersensitive to decongestants. For an allergic reaction so bad she feels her throat is closing up, benedryl would be what I'd take (if I was refusing to go to the doctor).

She probably has a sinus infection so antibiotics are probably needed. You should be able to get a prescription for that from the clinic tomorrow, but she'll still need to do the other stuff I listed above.

During allergy season, you have to stay ahead of the symptoms. You need to take an allergy medicine daily before symptoms start. Decongestants as needed. I'm serious about increasing the amount of water she drinks. You do all that---to keep it moving and draining---to avoid a sinus infection.

I am sure we have all seen your posting about the rude doctor and her going to the ER. did that have anything to do with your not having insurance? At least ER will treat everyone, regardless. How long have you been without insurance, doesn't your employer have a plan or some sort?

I agree with the other posters. She needs to see a specialist, not just the ER dr or primary care. Make an appointment with an ENT or Otolaryngologist. They may want to do a CT scan of her Sinuses, and that would probably be a good idea.

I had terrible PND for quite some time, and still do. I also get a stuffy nose which doesn't make sense. I can't breathe at night and snore. I am pretty sure I have sleep apnea.

I have a deviated septum and I am sure surgery would help. Why haven't I done it? I don't know.

That is your first step. Go to the ENT. If they tell you there is nothing they can do, get a second opinion, even if you have to drive further.

Sorry, I didn't see this. There are soooo many things connected to FM. I have no idea if that is one of them. I also have FM, and I have an auto-immune disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis.

You are past home remedies. If you are in a place where you cannot afford insurance, does your wife qualify for state help, such as Medicaid?

If she had these problems as well as a possible auto immune disorder, she needs health care. I have not found much help for my FM as far as medications go, so my dr is not really treating that.

I would urge your wife to go to social services and see if she qualifies for Medicare. All they can do is say no.

I agree with others, ENT doc asap. Anything else is really just a waste of time.

Without health insurance, it's impossible to "get her to an allergist or ENT". Financially impossible.Have you tried to make an appointment with a specialist lately? Before they ask your symptoms they ask your insurance information.

That was why I took her to the ER and had the horrible experience that we did.

I'd hoped that she would be treated for her problem. Instead she was treated horribly by an unprofessional excuse for a physician.
On the "up" side, this is not the first time he has done something similar to this.

My wife did go to a clinic and was given the same triad of medicines that alleviate the symptoms but do not get to the root cause. The doctor at the clinic did not get to see her when she was having an attack.
She was just coughing slightly and clearing her throat.

Until my health insurance kicks in, she wants to see a naturopathic doctor.
