Seeing this thread confirms what I have been saying for years ...Medicine is a guessing game and they guess at what is wrong with you . I am in constant pain btwn my shoulder blades and no dr has ever been able to give me a diagnosis on what it could possibly be . Medicine is a guessing game and I cannot tell you how much medicine has been thrown at me to no avail .. nothing works and believe me when I say it is not in my head as I have heard drs tell patients before . Just yesterday after 9 yrs of seeing her regular dr and being told nothing was wrong my cousin got a dx finally from a dr in georgia she lives in north florida , yes she had to travel to find a dr worth a dog gone . They found a spot on her liver after 6 cat scans you would think some dr would have found that before now ...so never ever count on one opinion always , always get a 2nd opinion especially where pain is concerned .Good luck to you and your daughter OP and I hope they can find out what is causing her problem .

We have been in the same boat, and sometimes it takes a while to get an appointment with a specialist, even when the person is acutely ill. IMO taking the OP's daughter to the ER- or even to her primary doctor is a good call when she's so ill- when those docs see the acute nature of the person's illness, they'll likely get her in to see the specialist ASAP- which the OP indicated was the case with her daughter. I hope she's able to get some relief before she sees the specialist, and things go well there.

Glad to see the outcome of her trip to the ER- sometimes doing so, even with a scheduled appointment with a specialist- is the only way to demonstrate to health care providers how acutely ill a patient really is. Unfortunately, they don't often take a person's word for that, so they assume the patient can wait to be seen- otherwise they'd show up at the ER! Tell you what, don't ever be afraid to take an acutely ill loved one to an ER. That's what ER's are there for, and they need to see what you're seeing in order to help the patient. All too often even if you take your loved one to a primary doc they'll tell you to go to an ER from there- and that's because ER's have the equipment and means to make at least preliminary diagnoses and to care for acutely ill patients.

And doing so gave you direct access to the specialist, via the ER doctors, short-circuiting the wait your daughter would have had to endure, and getting her diagnosed and treated sooner than she would have had otherwise.

My best wishes and hopes that your daughter will get the treatment and help she needs, and will be better soon.

There are many things that can present with same or similar symptoms, but it would be safe to say that she has a lot of inflammation and irritation in her GI tract.

That being the case, give her aloe vera juice (prefer unpasteurized, organic or raw if you can get it). She should take small amounts of that (straight if she can tolerate it... just sip a teaspoon or so and then wait about 10 or 15 minutes to see how she responds. You can give her a bit more and maybe mixed with apple juice or water.

Also, rice baby food (make it thin and soupy, not thick) with aloe juice or apple juice can begin the healing. The idea at this point is to prevent dehydration and calm her system down. Rice is rarely an allergen and is gluten free. No dairy at this point. Keep it simple. If she can keep water down, just start slow.

Carrot juice is another fantastic, nutrient rich food that can help if she can tolerate small amounts first.

If she can tolerate the rice baby cereal, and her appetite seems to be returning, cooked, mashed vegetables would be a good next step... carrots, peas. Nothing fancy, small amounts. It would be best to wait a day or so before adding this solid food.

The important thing is to try to increase her fluid intake with some sort of nutrition benefit. Hope this helps.

thank you all for your positive advice. so many pass judgment.. Now the hard part is the prep before the procedure, she's really fighting me on it and does not want to follow the directions. I keep telling her that if she goes there not empty all this was for nothing, and have to start all over again, and I know she will not do this again, she is a very stubborn teenager.

I wish you and your daughter well. Parenting is never easy, and dealing with uncertainty must be so difficult.

I would not want to prepare for that procedure either. Hopefully she will understand it has to happen to find the cause of the problem.Good Luck.

Oh yes, the prep is terrible; I do not think you could find anyone that would disagree with that! Thing is, if she doesn't do the prep right the doctor will know and she will have to do it all over again another day. Better to just get it over with! Make sure when she comes out of the procedure that you've got something nutritious for her to eat. She will be starving and likely isn't going to feel like "doing lunch" that day. I really hope they do not find Crohn's. I don't wish that on anyone. At least now they know how to spot it. My husband went through so many tests that just caused him more pain. While it is not easy, I believe it is easier than it used to be.

Good luck!

I can imagine, she's likely at the age where she knows everything, and believes that parents know nothing, understand nothing and are put on this earth only to be annoyances and endless sources of embarrassment to her and her peers; sometimes to provide money and transportation when she wants those, but they must stay out of sight and keep their mouths shut while providing those things. She'll grow up, and will be amazed at how smart you have become in only two years or so. I remember those days all too well!

Tongue in cheek of course, but it is a challenge to get teenagers to do anything that doesn't come from their peers, so I feel for you! And drinking about 1.5 or more liters of that atrocious tasting bitter liquid ( they say you can add lemon or lime Koolaid or some other flavoring to it, but IMO that makes it worse) is no one's idea of fun.

I remember when my daughter was about seven years old, she developed symptoms that were similar to those you describe in your daughter and they thought she might have some sort of inflammatory bowel disease after they ran all the usual tests. She was scheduled for an EGD and colonoscopy, and the GI doc suggested that since kids that age don't usually do well at drinking the prep liquid, he admit her to the hospital the night before the procedure and have a nasogastric tube put in so they could give her the prep that way. That's what we did, and that was an ordeal as well, but my daughter was a trooper and a good sport throughout, but she'd never want to do that again.

There was a 4 year old boy in the bed next to hers during her prep that was also scheduled for a colonoscopy the next day, and they attempted to give him his prep fluid via ng tube too, but the poor little thing couldn't keep the fluid down. They ended up prepping this kid for his colonoscopy with enemas till clear. He was another brave little soul, and we felt so sorry for him too!

So I guess there are other ways to be prepped for a colonoscopy, but I think I'd opt for drinking the stuff!

IN any case, best wishes and I hope that you get good news from your daughter's procedures, that they can fix whatever her problems are and she'll be feeling well soon!
