Is a D&C for a miscarriage painful. What is the process/details. I know it is personal, but I would really appreciate some assurance right now
Not painful at all. I had a miscarriage from a massive blood clot (subchorionic hematoma) in 08. It was so big it ruptured the amniotic sac. I hemmoraged badly (was around 12 weeks) . My D&c was quick and I felt fine. Infact I went out to dinner probably 8 hours after I had it( needed to get my mind off of what happened) I think Tylenol was the only think I took just as a precaution incase I felt a cramp. I was actually relieved to have it, I bled for 3 days before it became critical on the 3rd, the though of the baby
Dead inside me made my skin crawl. (Sorry but it's the truth)
Pretty much they laid me on the bed, they strapped down arms on either side ,outward. Legs in the stirrup like the OB/gyn but those were strapped too and that's all I remember. I woke up in recovery and stayed 30 mins or so and walked out . Of all the medical procedures , surgically, that I've had some that was the least painful.
After surgery to remove 1/3 of my cervix for severe dysplasia (pre-cancerous cells growing at a rapid rate), I had to have a D&C every six months for two years as a precaution. I was alert and awake for all of them, no IV sedation. The worst part of it, honestly, was the novocaine injections and the very first pinch of the scalpel to test if the meds were working. That, combined, took -maybe- six seconds, and it was pretty much just a sharper version of when you get a pap smear. Not pleasant, but fully tolerable. I had cramps for a few hours after each one, just as if I was getting my period. No tampons allowed for the next couple of days, pads only, and that was pretty much it.
The procedure itself only takes a few minutes and you should be able to walk out of the doctor's office with nothing more significant than what feels like menstrual cramps.
I had one a couple of years ago. They knocked me out so I felt or knew nothing. I bled a little, no big deal. I came home and took a nap and felt just fine.
