I had never been diagnosed with asthma before in my life and now it seems like I have it and it is induced by getting sick. Steroids, including inhaled, are supposed to suppress the immune system and this is why I am worried:
I have been getting chest infections this past year on and off whenever I got a cold, flu, etc. Recently, I was battling a chest infection for about a month which seemed to have been brought on from cleaning an old house. So it seems allergies maybe brought that on. I started to get over that, when it seems I developed an infection in my nose. Then a week later, I started coming down with another cold. After finally feeling like I was to the point I should go to the doctors, I finally went and he prescribed me antibiotics, as well as albuteral inhaler, flonase nasal spray, and flovent diskus. Doctor says that I should be taking it all the time to prevent getting infections when I get sick. The thing is, I get sick a lot especially when working, which I just went back after a period of time. I want to not get sick so much to begin with. I am afraid if I take flovent it will suppress my immune system even more.
My child has viral induced asthma and takes inhaled steroids. If he didn't he would be in the hospital all the time for colds which at one point he was when we didn't have proper diagnosis. So I know it can be beneficial. But he gets sick a lot too and I wonder if his steroids makes him more susceptible to that.
Point is, I already get sick a lot, more than most people I know, and while flovent might help to prevent infection when I am sick, I don't want it to contribute to me getting sick more frequently. I am still in the throws of a horrible sinus infection and trying to raise my immune system to fight it with antibiotics and natural ways, I don't need something bringing my immune system down. What do you guys think? Should I take it?
I think you should have a good talk with your doctor or pharmacist. Or get a second opinon.
Ultimately, if the benefits outweigh the risks, I think you should take the medicine.
