My husband has been telling me that I've been snoring at night and it's starting to affect his sleep. I can't help but be embarrassed and a little hurt, as irrational as that sounds, but I don't know what's causing it and how to stop!

I'm not overweight, I don't smoke, rarely drink and am in good health. The only thing that I can think of is that I am awakened several times a night- about 3 to 4 times and sometimes more- by one or both of our young children. They come and want to crawl into bed with me because they're scared, need water, feel sick, etc, so I'm awakened a lot and don't feel as if I'm getting a restful night's sleep and haven't for several years. If I lock our bedroom door they try to open it and when they can't they just wail and go back to their rooms and are loud enough to wake me up anyway. My husband rarely helps me with them at night (because he gets up so early) unless I ask, or demand because I'm so damn tired. I had to deal with his horrible snoring that would take me to the guest room for YEARS, so I can't help but say to him, "Suck it up!"

I do want to find out what could be causing the snoring. We do sleep with a ceiling fan on at night and lately the AC has been running at night, too. Any ideas?

Sleep apnea? Don't have to be fat to have it.

I don't stop breathing when I sleep, so I don't think that it could be sleep apnea. I've been under a lot of stress for the past year and a half and it seems to have gotten worse in the last several months, but I don't know if stress causes snoring?

Time to see your family doctor or an ENT specialist for a diagnosis. So many different things can be going on. Read the information below, should be helpful answering some of your questions.

(Snoring is caused by a narrowing of the upper airway during sleep. This can be due to large tonsils, a soft palate, a long uvula or excessive flabby tissue at the throat. All of these areas relax during sleep)

According to sleep specialists, all snoring is abnormal. You would not know if you stopped breathing multiple times in the night as a person does not usually rouse enough to be conscious of it.
