I'm looking at apartments off-campus for next year. It seems that a lot of the affordable ones are unfurnished. I have a fair amount of furniture at my parents house that I can bring, but I was wondering if setting up a rollaway bed (that we already have) would be alright as a permanent sleeping situation. Are rollaways generally comfortable enough for long term use or would it cause back pain?

Rollaways aren't intended for long-term use. But you'll need a couch too won't you? Why not get a futon? They're comfortable, and serve dual functions as a couch and a bed. You could make the rollaway into a "daybed" style couch against the wall in your living room and decorate it with cushions and pillows, an end-table right up against each side so it looks like couch arms, cover it with a nice throw, and then it can double as a bed for overnight guests.

I used a futon for years when I was in college and after, smartest investment I made when I was in my 20's.

You'll be fine. You're young, you have Gumby bones. When I was in my teens and twenties, I slept on futons, couches, cots and floors. I had a bed at home, I just wasn't always there.

When I went camping with friends, we slept on the ground. No one had an air mattress.

If you find the rollaway is killing your back, do some thing else.

You'll be fine. College students have slept on much worse over the years. My brother put up with an air mattress for a year as a sophomore. My ex was aggressively paying off loans and when I first met him, he was 25 living in what amounted to a converted pantry that just had space for his dresser, two feet of space at the end of the bed, and an air mattress on the floor that tended to deflate overnight. He lived. :P

Only you will know what causes back pain.
