I don't wear my contacts daily for work like I used to 1-2 yrs ago. These days, I rarely wear them, but I kind of stopped because they were making my eyes have this discharge & so irritated! But it wasn't due to having old or unclean contacts. I kept them very clean, never used tap water to clean them, never slept in them, etc. & this discharge & irritation never used to happen before.

I finally wore contacts 1 day this past wk for a few hrs & it was murder & I had to run home early & take my contacts out!

I have to wear contacts again this Sat & I know it's going to be a pain. I got some soothing, moisturizing eye drops to keep handy in my purse in case I need to. That should help, right?

Anyone know why this is happening? Is it just my getting older or something?

I don't know anybody who uses tap water. If you have to present that disclaimer, you have questionable handling of your lens. Perhaps your eyes are sensitive to the multipurpose solution you use to rinse, disinfect, and store the lens. After removing each lens from the multipurpose solution, I always rinse the lens with saline solution and store them temporarily in a saline solution for several minutes before wearing them. I find it uncomfortable wearing lens straight after storing them in Renu or Replenish.

If you store lens in saline solution for too long, the salt buildup on the lens will also be painful.

Thanks. No, I just wanted to say that I don't use any kind of tap water because you know, some people out there do if they run out of solutions & think it's OK occasionally.

I'm going to try better solution, such as the brand Clear Care or AOSept, which I learned about from someone else.

My son had terrible issues wearing contacts, until his doctor told him to try Clear Care. That worked well. But, as a college student, he still wasn't meticulous about caring for therm, so I bought him some BioTrue solution. He hasn't had any problems with it.

Mattie, BioTrue is what I've been using now. I bought some Clear Care & will use it for the next time I wear my contacts.

Another thing my son's eye doctor recommended ( to use with the Clear Care) was preservative free saline. We found it in a spray can at Publix, but it isn't readily available around here.

I've been wearing soft contacts for about 20 years and have kept my routine almost exactly the same ever since I started. I've been using the same solution (Opti-free) for as long as I can remember and never had a problem wearing contacts. I tried to wear hard contacts but my eyes wouldn't tolerate them. I realize each person is different but it is concerning that you have irritation and discharge after not having that problem before. I'd talk to your doctor since you don't want to take a chance with your eyes. It could be something simple or it could be a more serious problem.

A couple of days after I wear my contacts, my eye are back to normal again. Tomorrow night is when I'm supposed to wear them again. At least it's only from 5pm - about 10pm.
